    Quail Hatch Rates

I figured you all could tell me what a good hatch rate for coturnix quail is. My first group hatched 7 of 12. This group looks like 6 of 12. My own birds are laying the eggs, so I'm putting in fresh eggs each time. I have 1 male with 3 females and 2 males with 4 females.

Can I put quail chicks of two different ages together?

I have a quick question. Long story short I have 6 quail chicks that have hatched. I have 2 quail chicks that hatched about 19 days ago. Would it be a problem to put them together?

The mean rooster gets the ax. And do you thin down your flock before winter?

Well, my husband comes in and he says "that barred rock has got to go." Actually, it wasn't the barred rock, but I knew which one he was talking about. It was a feathered-legged cuckoo marans roo that is totally maladjusted. I'm talking he will come at you if you make eye contact with him...

What happenned? UPDATE Yay! I have a BROODY!!!

OMG-- I thought this would NEVER happen. I don't just have ONE broody! I have TWO!!! Long story short, I found my RIR sitting on a bunch of eggs. I thought I'd move her to another box outside the main pen with the eggs and she pretty much didn't "get" it. So, I put her back and put the...

Fourth of July Chicks--did anyone else do that?

Quite by accident, I'll have a bunch of new chicks for the Fourth of July. I have 5 pips, which include 2 marans mixes and 3 Barnevelders. Maybe I'll luck out and get 7 to hatch out. They're peeping up a storm, too. Anyone else discover that they "planned" for July 4th?

    Introducing poults to others

Hi-- I have a question about introducing turkeys to each other. I have two 3 month old BBWs and 6 week old heritage poults (mixed). The BBWs are living with 6 leghorn/Australorp mixes and are doing fine. I want to add the heritage poults with the group. I've put them in a cage and have...

    Weird Food Taboos

There has been something that has bothered me about my family that has to do with the food they eat. Now, I would understand it if they were vegan or vegetarian, or had some sort of allergies but they're not and they don't. My late mother wouldn't eat any color eggs except white. She...

    My Blue Scales are Broody?

I have a pair of mated blue scales that I bought last year. This year, I've noticed that they've made a nest from wood chips and the female laid eggs there. I put some hay in, and they dragged it over to the nest and lined it. Since then, I've been tempted to leave the eggs there and let...

    Oh, I GET it!

I was one of those skeptical chicken persons who wondered about quail. Even after I got my blue scales, I still wondered. I mean, the blue scales aren't friendly. Still, I tried to get coturnix. I have 10 cots right now. Oh my. They're friendly. Tame. They make cute vocalizations. And...

Got my Coturnix today--are they really this calm?

Okay, so I got my cots today! I ended up getting 7 females and 3 males. I was going to argue for two males but the guy selling them would only sell 2 females per ,male and threw in a female for free. So I separated them into two cages, since they were all getting along in a big cage, I...

Two questions:How long do quail need to be under brooder lamps? Oh, and can Coturnix be housed toge

Two questions: 1. I may be hatching out my first blue scale quail. How long do the babies need to be under the brooder lamps? 2. In the meantime, I'm picking up some coturnix from the same fellow I got my blue scales for. I'll be getting 2 males and 4 females. Can these coturnix stay...

    My curse continues

Sometimes when I'm on BYC, I feel like the kid who was picked last. Oh wait, I was the kid picked last. Once again, my personality strikes and I'm left unliked. Ah well. I think I'll go hug a chicken.

    Scalped Chicken!! Warning: Graphic

I'm over at a convention the entire weekend, and, of course, something nasty has to happen while I barely have time to care for anyone. Last night, I noticed one of my EE mixes had what looked like a black ribbon along the back of her head. The roos were mercilessly picking on her, so I went...

I feel awful Update and Sick Goat

The entire two weeks have been just terrible. I lost a bunch of turkey poults to an unknown disease despite all I did right, and now I screwed up and killed some chicks I just hatched because I was paranoid and cleaned out the brooder with a small amount of bleach. Either that or they got too...

    What killed my duck?

I just lost a duck to a predator. I know I've been having raven problems with them filching eggs, but I'm wondering if I have a weasel. I found one of my biggest ducks eaten from the rear end and ate all the organs, leaving the rest. Thoughts? Help!

UPDATE-- New Poults; Some Died. Help! My turkey chicks are dying!

I am really frustrated and need advice. I bought some heritage turkey chicks from a reputable source and got them on Tuesday. They were doing fine until two days ago. Basically, they are dropping dead. Sometimes they show lethargy, but not always. A few chicks appeared cyanotic, suggesting...

    An Annoying Gander Question

I adopted two geese (a mated pair) from a woman who hated them. I have four other geese who are well behaved, all mated pairs. I discovered that the new gander is impressed on humans and is looking for love in all the wrong places and insists on biting and misbehaving. He's scaring my goats...

    What Just Happened?

I have a pen with three breeding pairs of geese, several ducks and a guard llama. This year, with two broody geese, I decided to allow the geese to sit on some eggs and hope for some goslings. Two of the geese were quick to take up residence in the dog house/brooder hut and stole eggs from...
