Never heard of a silent rooster. I know the pitch on some roosters is lower so the crow doesn't carry as much. Maybe through generations of breeding quieter roosters? I personally love the crow of a rooster :)
Chickens are amazingly resilient creatures and I've had birds pull through with wounds similar to this and also much worse. I also use Vetericyn. It works wonders! Just do as most others here have said. Give your girl a safe, warm, clean environment to rest and recover. Fluids first. It might...
:( Maybe putting a stuffed animal in might help? Or something she could snuggle up with and feel secure? Maybe when you hold her, cradle her in a small, soft towel until she falls asleep. Then maybe you'll be able to wean her onto just sleeping with the towel. Gosh, I'm so sorry for your loss...
I'm so happy to hear this story! Good for your little girl! Chickens are the best! Several people who have visited my place fell in love with chickens and are now raising their own flock too! :)
I'm raising a bunch of different breed but no Buckeyes yet. I just love this forum. There are so many friendly and knowledgeable people here. Anyways, have fun with your chickies and welcome to the BYC community!!
I love cats myself and have 3 that live peacefully with my chickens. They'll try to catch sparrows and other birds but pay no attention to the day old chickies scurrying around them. Go figure Anyways, I'm so sorry for your loss. If you know who's cat it is, I'd give them a warning then call...
Same thing just happened to me! I was due to start lockdown last night. On my last turn of the eggs, I heard a peep and noticed a couple of eggs had pips. Eggs are from my Pekins and I'm happy to say 6 have already hatched on day 26 :)
Shouldn't be a problem. I have all different breeds running together and I hatch out mixed chickens all the time. He'll start struttin and crowing soon and not long after you should have some fertile eggs. Now is the decision o hatch via hen or incubator. Not all breeds of chickens are broody...
Hi and welcome to BYC! Not sure what breed they are either but the one on the left seems to be a boy by the looks of his comb and tail feathers. Cute chickies by the way. Have fun on the site!
I've been raising my turkeys, chickens, and ducks together with no problem. I decided to go with Narragansetts but was considering Royal Palms and Bronzes too. Looking back, I'd probably go with the Royal Palm or some other smaller breed. The toms are beasts and sometimes pick on my chickens. No...
As long as they are feathered in and have a place to stay dry they should be fine. I also keep my chicks on medicated feed for the first 16 weeks then switch over to a lay formula. The pellets seem to really help reduce wasted feed.
Your little boy is growing up and just doing what he's supposed to do. Letting the other chickens know who's boss! LOL. As long as a rooster doesn't start attacking me or my family and friends he's ok. I think he's just establishing his position but if he is just mean and rough with the ladies...
You might want to look into Welp Hatchery. I ordered from them 3 times last season and every time my chicks arrived healthy and they always sent extras. There is a 25 chick minimum but shipping is included in the price. Comes out to about $2.50 for females and $1.75 for males. If you invest in...
