    Welsummer not laying

I have a 9 month old Welsummer who has been laying pretty regularly (about 4/wk) for the last 3 months. In the last 2 weeks I have not gotten any eggs from her and she is no longer squatting. Any idea of what is going on? Thanks.

    Egg songs?

Why do chickens have egg songs? If chickens were in the wild I would imagine they would not want to announce an egg to any would be predators. My GLW does an egg song when she is going into the nest and then after she has layed an egg 30 minutes later. Is this common? Just my curious...

    BO Gender

Any chance this is a pullet? I am not betting on it but as you will see in the second picture this one is very different. They are both 17 weeks.

    Chicken Stock and Fatty floater

First let me start by saying I am amazed at how different chicken stock from my own chickens is from store bought chickens. After cooking the bones and everything down and letting it cool, there is this floating fat layer I have never gotten with store bought chicken. That being said, what...

Birds and the Bees or Rooster and Hen

Can someone please tell me how an egg gets fertilized? My son asked me this yesterday and I have no idea, biologically, how it works. I am still working on understanding all the anatomy differences of a chicken anyway. Maybe someone could point me in the direction of a diagram of the internal...

    Missing voice box?

I have a BO Cockeral, 16 weeks old, that has no crow. He stretches his neck, opens his mouth and nothing. No sound at all. Has anyone heard of this? Will it last?

    CX or older chickens?

There is a lot of discussion on roasting younger birds and stewing older birds but what if I wanted to grind up the chicken meat and make sausage? Which chicken would you use? Thanks.

    Cuckoo Maran or Barred Rock

I ordered one of each from Ideal. They are 10.5 weeks. There is a pretty big difference in the two chicks. This is the largest. Which one is she, Maran or Rock? Thanks.

    BO Gender

Got this BO as a packing peanut. We have found homes for 3 or 4 of the ten we originally received. Hubby has agreed to keeping one cockeral. This particular one, I tried to mark with food coloring (very messy) because it is constantly with our EE(the only one she allows near). This one will...

    Molting or feather picking?

My Brahma has just showed up with this spot. It does not appear to have any bleeding associated with it and it does not appear she is being picked on. She is only 10 weeks. Can they molt at this age? Thanks.

    Weight at Processing

My CX will 6 weeks in 3 days. I weighed some today. They are 5.5-6 lbs. At what weight do you guys usually process? They look good. They still have good movement as they try to run in the yard. 7 Weeks will be Christmas Day and 8 weeks on New Years. Thinking of processing the week...

    My coop

After months of planning and waiting for the 100* temps to drop, to begin construction, I finally got my coop up. WooHoo!!!! I moved my 4 week old chicks out there last week. Excited as I was, I had a neighbor come over and call it an eye sore. Luckily for me she has spent the last 2 years...

    Breed and Gender?

I got 10 of these as packing peanuts. I am secretly hoping that the hatchery didn't give me 10 little roos. This little guy is 4 weeks old. He? follows me around the yard, sitting on my foot every time I stop. When the others puff up, stare him/her down and tries to fight, this little one...

    Food

I have nearly 2 week old CX. I am having a hard time finding what to feed them after chick food. At our local store there is a grower but it has 15% protein. I think (correct me if I am wrong) they need higher protein. Is it possible to continue a non medicated chick feed (22%) their whole...

    My new chicks

I got my first chicks from Ideal yesterday. Post office called at 3am to let me know they were here. I ordered 13 and got 23. Wow!! I was never expecting that many packing peanuts. They survived the night. All the kids in the neighborhood have been over to greet the chicks and I am...

    Cornish x brooding

I am very excited. I am getting my first chickens next week. I ordered Egg and meat chickens. I assume that I will be able to pick out the meaties after a couple weeks because of size differences. My question: How long are meaties in the brooder box with a light before they go outside...

    Science Project

My son is required to do a science project for school that should take a few months. I suggested a meat chicken experiment. I thought separate the chickens into 2 or 3 groups and feed differently. Which causes the chickens to put on the most weight at slaughter time? What do you guys think...
