How can you not love a duck??? That is entirely too cute!
I have the same issue. I love my garden. I try to plant things that my Great Dane can't snap with his weight. He doesn't try to hurt the plants, but if he backs into them, it's over if they're tender.
The ducks are another story...
I bought them from an Ace Hardware on impulse....so I'm pretty sure they were incubated. Are you saying it's because they're domesticated that they will attack the young? Does everyone that owns ducks deal with that? What a headache! I sort of figured once I got a broody hen, everything...
That is hilarious! I've got one that keeps trying to make a nest in different places in the yard. I think she's getting irritated that I keep taking her egg every morning. Poor thing! I see her go back to check on her egg later, and it's not there. She's probably thinking, "Darnit! Not...

Ha! I knew you weren't going to get by without someone saying something about that! BUT, at least you took the time to have the heart-to-heart "quack" with her!
I completely understand. My first ducks were mallards. I loved them SOOOOO much. I purposely didn't have their wings...
Sorry bout the subject.... Couldn't help myself!
I had a few Khaki babies hatch a week ago (my first). I have since done what everyone told me to and have kept the drakes separate, as well as the other hen who is not the momma just to keep them safe.
Now, I have a momma hen who has decided...
I'm so sorry for you! How heartbreaking. I'm very impressed that you had the nerve to cut her open and find out what it was. I know it's a terrible loss for you, but just posting this may have saved some little duck out there (like mine). I almost didn't look at your post, but I'm so glad...
Thanks for the advice. They are at ground level, so there won't be any falling. I guess I just really need to figure how to keep them separate from the adults for a couple of days. We have a pond but it is basically just a 4-inch puddle (lack of rain and leak in levy) right now with sloping...
I went to check on my broody Khaki's eggs tonight (I thought they were still a good week away from hatching) and two have internally pipped. I almost stroked I was so excited!
So, I'm going to force myself to leave them alone.
I do have a question though. She has been sitting on 19...
That's just crazy. First, I would have thought maybe instinct allowed them to know the eggs were bad. But, since you're saying they have chicks in them.... I just don't know. That's nuts. I have a broody khaki right now who will actually go out into the pen and get the egg laid by my other...
I've been on my husband about getting a couple of pigs too. He just doesn't seemed that thrilled, even though he absolutely LOOOVVVESSS bacon. So, now I've back down to possibly some turkeys. It didn't take him that long to get used to the ducks, though now that I have 20 new ones hatching...
My dad always told me: One female and the rest males and the population will become extinct, but one male, and the rest females and the population will explode.
Hmmmmmm..... very, very good idea. I think I might try that. I thought about putting it in a ziplock in the incubator and opening it a few times a day for air, but if it's good, would hate to alter the "conditions" like that. I think I might do the paper towel thing. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for your replies. I am absolutely sick to my stomach about it. I sat there and watched this little duck grow every day, until he totally filled up the shell and I couldn't see any more movement. I can see the air sac clearly, possibly a vein (POSSIBLY), but the egg is definitely a...
I sympathize with you!!! My khaki campbell drake does the same thing. He even attacked me the other evening when I put their food in the pen. But, I surprised him and grabbed him by the throat and held him to ground like the previous poster suggested. I had read about it once on here before...
I would definitely go talk to the neighbor, and try to appeal to his sense of humanity (if he has any). Just tell him how much you love your ducks (try to get your eyes all watery), and how very sorry you are, and you won't let it happen again. I know a lot of people won't agree, but HUMBLE is...
Does anyone know if it's normal for a fertile khaki campbell egg to turn gray towards the end of incubation? The last couple of days, it has gotten so dark. It looks so odd next the newly placed eggs in the incubator. I can't see inside it minus the air space, so I'm hoping it's full of...
Goodness girl, I wish you lived a little closer to me. I have tons of fertile eggs you can have. Well, not tons, but definitely more than I can keep up with. My husband has been very patient with my duck "experiment", but I have ducks sitting on 22 in a nest outside and I am putting 8 in the...
