    28 days and counting...

Oh trust me, I've gone over to the brush pile, gotten down on my hands & knees trying to peer in to see what I could see. Hayloft chicken has been followed (stealthily) so that I know exactly where in all those 500+ bales she's sitting.

    28 days and counting...

I have 2 free range chickens that went broody on me, one disappearing into the hay loft and the other one somewhere, I think under a pile of brush I was going to burn. They both "disappeared" over 4 weeks ago. Hayloft hen shows up regularly for food, drink & dust bath; brushpile hen has shown...

how do i get my months olds to love me again?

I'll second (or is that third) the sunflower seed suggestion. I feed BOSS to my horses and the chickens come running at equine dinner time as they know it means I'll scatter a cup of the seeds on the ground for them. I've even had them waiting for me at the back door in the summer so they can...

    back wound-maggots- HELP

I had a bantam rooster attacked by a fox 2 years ago and first, as encouragement, he's still with us. Like you I had no experience with this sort of thing and based on advice I received here, I added antibiotics to the water supply for him (and his hens). Additionally I cleaned his wounds with...

    Baby Roo?

Quote: LOL, I've posted their father and fore-mothers (?) in the past for breed and everyone has an opinion on the breeds that went into making them. I get green eggs from most of the hens with the occasional pink egg layer showing up, thus the reason I called them EEs. Aren't EE's supposed...

    Baby Roo?

Oh good, I'm glad roo seems to be the consensus. His full sibling is turning out to have a stray silkie gene (see picture) and I'm getting excited about seeing the results of them breeding back to each other.

Quote: Mom's not "new", she hatched out about 1 1/2 years ago, the off-spring of the roo I pictured and a white easter egger who looked very similar to her, just a little whiter. Her mother was also the daughter of that roo and a hen that was "normal" but with the coloring of the chick in...

Well this is interesting as her father is the only roo I've had for 4 years now and she's the 4th generation all sired (and grandsired, ggrandsired etc) by him. She's the first to look like this.

Gosh, she sure is looking that way isn't she. She & her sibling are both promised to my SIL so what a surprise that would be.

    Baby Roo?

(S)He is just shy of 2 months old and is a bantam easter egger. I'm 99% sure he's a roo but thought I'd see if you all agree. Pictures of parents follow. Mom (white hen in foreground) Dad

Quote: No, she's a run-of-the-mill (although very sweet) bantam easter egger. I've edited the original post to add pictures if that helps.

I have a chick that is about 2+ months old, well past the age that her "down" should have turned to feathers yet she is just a fuzzy bunny of a chick. None of her feathers are smooth or normal, instead all, including wing feathers are very ragged and uneven. I'm wondering if she has a disease...

Bare butt spreading to entire body, other chickens

I have a 2 year old black australorp who's been through the normal molting cycle in the past. About 2 months ago I thought she was molting so didn't think much of it until I realized that her entire butt was bare, completely featherless. I kept an eye to make sure pin feathers started to...

who would like to take a guess at what type of birds these are?

I don't know that they're a "chicken" but he reminds me of a roadrunner.

    Dog attack!!

Our rooster was attacked by a fox about 2 years ago and someone here advised adding a vitamin to his water, which we did. Also we treated his multiple puncture wounds with a triple antibiotic ointment although you need to do a search here to make sure it doesn't contain one particular medicine...

Horse stepped on Duck..pic is on post 13

duck&chickencrazy : .....if anyone knows of one that is within 20-30 miles of 46580 please tell me.... We were in a similar situation years ago and called the state Audobon Society. They were able to give us the name of the closest avian rehabilitator who was able to help us out.

I love my Alpha hen but she needs help and doesn't like being touched.

I hold their wings to their sides against my body and if they still don't calm down I cover their eyes/head with a cupped hand. Essentially this is the same idea as the sock and it does seem to work.

    Frostbite Help!!

Unless it's very severe (in which case I don't know) they will survive frostbite just fine. My bantam roo was frost bitten last winter badly enough that he lost part of his wattles and even bits of his comb. Today you'd never know he'd been frostbitten, his wattles grew back and his comb...
