    Paint smell in brooder

I repainted my old brooder on Sunday with fast-drying spray paint. I've left it outside since to dry and air out, but now I'd like to put my new chicks in it. It still smells a little paint-y though. Will that harm the chicks?

    Starlings!

I have a flock that is eating the chicken food, which is bad enough. But I have had my first infestation of red mites in the nest boxes, which I blame on the starlings, and now I am finding broken and eaten eggs! Am I correct in thinking the starlings might have brought the red mites? And how...

A fox got our New Hampshire Red rooster and we really miss him! I hand-raised him from day-old, so although he was fierce in protecting his hens, he could always be handled by anyone, including 5-year-old boys who regularly picked him up. I'm hoping to find another red rooster (because he was so...

    Maybe a mountain lion?

I heard a commotion in the chicken yard at noon last week, checked it out right away and found one hen with some blood on her beak, so I assumed there was a chicken fight. Then I counted heads and one hen was gone without a trace. Today my neighbor called to say that a mountain lion has been...

    Hens tearing up nests

My year-old hens have suddenly started tearing up the nesting material in their laying boxes, taking it out of the nests, and scattering it around the henhouse! What do you make of this behavior? They are leaving the nest boxes bare!
