Do most chickens just naturally carry this bacteria? Or is it something they have to pick up from somewhere else? If they do have it, is it passed along into all their eggs? How can you get rid of it or treat for it? How do you know if they have it?
The reason I ask is because I fed a food...
... was found dead this morning in the brooder box. I am devastated. It was the last to hatch, and it was a beautiful grey/yellow. The sweetest chick - that loved to cuddle. It was fine last night, but this morning ... I am clueless as to what happened. My sweet little baby, rest well...
Ok, so here is the whole story... Mama broody sat on her nest. When temperatures were near 100 degrees outside, I brought her into the house to hatch her chicks in a/c comfort; which she has for the past week. Day before yesterday she hatched out two chicks, but I had to intervene. The first...
...if your chick is growing up to be rumpless? Where does that gene come from? Do you have to have at least one parent that is rumpless to produce it? The reason I ask is because I have a group of chicks that is at least 4 weeks old, and 4 of the 6 don't have any tail feathers, and what is...
Ok, here is the situation(and I will be as impartial as possible telling only the honest facts): I work at a store and I enjoy the co-workers, the store, the customers, and even my boss who is the store owner. I work there part time, and have been there for the past two and a half years. Over...
Just wondering, but don't broody hens set for a few days after her chicks have hatched? My Welsummer had 11 eggs under her, 5 hatched, and as soon as they were up and about she got off her nest and left the remaining eggs. They cooled for about 24 hours... think they're dead? I tucked them...
Has anyone had a roo that feathered out Really fast as a chick? One of my chicks feathered in really fast(including tail feathers), but then, at around 2 weeks also started growing a pretty large comb. The other chick that feathered in that fast has the smallest comb and I am fairly certain it...
Kyron Horman is a 7 year old that lives in the same area I grew up in and has vanished. I never thought I would ever hear that such a thing has happened so close to 'home'. They are still searching for him. I know there are many children who go missing each and every day, but he disappeared...
Well, after all the waiting, and the sorrow, and the wonder and amazement, we have our final results for our first hatch with our first broody hen. Mama hen dedicatedly sat on 16 eggs initially, but as the days went on she pushed 2 out of the nest. When the time was right, she hatched out 8 of...
Just wondering what it might mean if the entire egg is dark. Is it rotten and ready to explode? Or is it getting ready to hatch??? Just wondering. I couldn't find an air cell anywhere and this is my first attempt at hatching... well, letting my broody hen hatch them. Any help would be...
K, so I could NOT resist picking up a couple bantams this year. I just love the tiny little fluffs. So, I selected two booted chicks. My question is, what breed are they?? My Guess is one might be a Brahma and the other a Cochin??? Maybe?? The light colored chick has what appears as some...
Thanks so much for your help in identifying what gender my two little chicks are(they are around 6 weeks old). I am suspecting one roo and one pullet, but I could be totally wrong. On the last picture, the pink/red on the comb is from someone pecking her I think - anyway, it didn't have any...
Here are my silver laced wyandottes at approx. 6 weeks of age(might be 7 weeks, but I forget) - I suspect they are cockerels, but then I drove myself crazy with my BAs a couple years ago and they turned out to be all hens. So, maybe I am wrong about these too?? Thanks for all your help...
We haven't really had any Warm weather for the baby chicks to go out in, but yesterday it was really glorious and the chicks are now old enough that they can be moved outside. So I took a few photos of their first day out. I think they will get used to it
They don't seem terribly excited...
We had several, I'd say around 8 or so, turkey vultures circling low( douglas fir tree top height) over head today. Our big roo had all the girls safely tucked away in the chicken house, such a good boy he is. But I thought turkey vultures didn't catch prey like other birds, that they ate...
Had to take some eggs away from my broody today, as she was setting on a bizillion and couldn't cover them all. Some were in the stages of very early growth. I candled them and then cracked them open as I couldn't tell anything really by candling them. They are just in the very early stages...
Ok, I know, I should have done my research Before I bought the cute little ducklings. BUT... being that I have been raising/keeping chickens for 3 years now I didn't think it would be Too difficult. My son and husband are really excited about them and are looking forward to making a pond area...
