What should I do for a bite wound?

A dog from down the road just grabbed my favorite chicken out of my flower bed while I was giving my baby a bottle. My husband chased the dog home and brought Daisy back. She is still alive but there is a pretty big wound under her wing. She is limping (if you could even call it that) on that...

    Mites!!!

My silkie has acted funny for the past few days. I was afraid my bigger chickens had been picking on her because we've had bad weather and they've had to stay in their run a lot more. This morning, she didn't come out when I opened the door and I found her laying on the coop floor. I scooped...

Pea Pods- Will they eat them?

I just shelled some peas from my garden and was wondering my chickens would eat the shells. Has anyone done this?

    Foot Problem

My mother has a Pekin duck that is a little over a year old and has recently begun to have foot problems. She says that periodically it looks like both feet sort of crumple up, and it can't walk for a while. Then, all of a sudden, they straighten up and it is keeping up with its buddies again...

    Puppy problem - need answers

We have been fostering a dog from the animal shelter while she had her puppies. She's a medium size, young dog that we don't know the history on because she was left at the shelter when no one was there. She had 9 puppies in the bedroom closet ten days ago and has been great with them so far...

Faverolles- Are they always this broody?

From my 4 hens hatched in April of 2008, my faverolle has gone broody twice. The other three have never been broody ( though one has never layed an egg either, but thats a different and equalling perplexing issue). Anyway, my mom's faverolles from the same hatch are also the only ones to go...

    Will my silkie ever lay?

My little silkie hatched in April last year and has still never layed an egg. I know silkies aren't the best layers, but is it possible that one would never lay? I love her anyway so it doesn't matter, I'm just curious.

    Christmas trees and parrots

Our parrot flies around in the house for most of the day. I know he is going to be thrilled when we bring in the 11 ft. Christmas tree. Will it be dangerous for him to nibble on a leyland cypress?

I need a saying for my chickens' Chrismas card

I got my little white chicken to wear a santa hat for the picture while my husband held her. I held my polish rooster. Any clever sayings for the christmas card?

    Shiny green feathers on hen

I noticed today that one of our EE hens has a lot of irridescent feathers around her neck and tail. I thought I read somewhere that green mainly shows up in roosters. What gives? . . . not that I'm complaining. They are pretty.

    Over-enthusiastic rooster= bald-headed hen

Is there anything I can do about this?

Is regular mulch ok for chickens?

I already use pine shavings in my coop, but my chickens love to dig in our landscaping mulch when I let them out in the yard. We're thinking of expanding the run and I'm wondering if it would be ok to put some landscaping mulch in there for them to play with.

    Still waiting ... sigh.

Our chickens are 21 weeks old now and still not one egg. I hate being patient.

Will my rooster ever like hens?

I have a Polish rooster who only likes the one silkie pullet he was raised with. He keeps my other three hens run off. Sometimes he won't even let them come out of the house. They all hatched back at the beginning of April. Will he grow out of this and be at least cordial to the other hens?

    Favorite chicken making strange noise

When I was outside yesterday, I heard a strange noise that sounded sort of like a dog's sqeaky toy. It only sounded twice, so figured it was my neighbors dog playing. Yesterday afternoon, I was working in my hen house when I heard the noise again and realised it was coming from my 4 mo. old...

    Monogomous Rooster?

I only have five chickens. It's hard to imagine that few would break into cliques, but that seems to be the deal. My Polish rooster, Garth, seems to only have a place in his heart for my dimunitive silkie, Buffy. He chases the other three EE hens away. The two groups even sleep on opposite...

    The vet killed Kiwi!

OMG This can't be real! My whole family is out of town, I'm farm sitting, and the (explitive) vet killed my mom's baby. A little girl was visiting last week and broke Kiwi's leg, but she had a cast and was getting around as happily as ever. Yesterday morning, I dropped her off at the vet...

    I'm so disgusted!

One of our guineas that had been missing for a while showed up yeasterday with two babies, which probably means she left the nest before most of her eggs completely hatched. That's not the worst part though. Now the male guinea periodically decides to peck the babies, even picking them up in...

    When did your polish crow?

I'm just curious because I have a SL Polish that is 17 wks old and his feathering is that of a roo. Yet that is the only masculin thing about him-- he's not muscular or bossy, etc. Is this breed slower to mature?
