Any good deep bedding coop clean out ideas?

I only shovel it out about twice a year, but with deep bedding there’s a lot to shovel out and my compost heap isn’t that close. My coop has a wooden floor.

Any good deep bedding coop clean out ideas?

I’m looking for easy coop clean out ideas. I’m tired of dusty shovelling and it takes forever to get it all out. I have visions of that machine cities use to clean out their sidewalks with a giant hose. I want to suck it all out straight to the compost heap. Is this even possible?

Turkey feather tree craft - an idea for using all your feathers!

I am always searching for ways to use my poultry feathers. I process my birds myself and just can't stand to waste their beautiful feathers. So I collect them and my collections are getting a bit large. I make brooches with some of the really fancy ones and sell them on Etsy...

I have a recipe from my aunt for my favorite cheesecake - it's light and melts in your mouth and best of all it uses 10 eggs! I have a tutorial on my blog: http://iridescent-dreams.blogspot.ca/2013/11/yummcheesecake-recipe.html Here is the recipe: Cheesecake Dough 1 1/2 cups flour 2...

Brooder on wheels made from pieces of plywood and old window

I got a new batch in my brooder. It cost very little to build - I made it with leftover pieces of plywood and pressboard. I only bought one piece of plywood and a wooden window from Habitat for Humanity Restore. It's good for up to 2 weeks depending on the breed, then they go in a bigger brooder...

The Poultry Cottage - a pallet coop for summer residents

I finished my mostly pallet coop for meat chickens this spring, just in time for the first batch. Total cost around $100. Size: about 90 square feet in a sort of U shape.

Cochin Rooster attacks us daily -

I had a mean Cochin roo as well - tried all the suggestions on this site to fix his attitude to no avail. Gave him away to a farm that needed him as a stud - he's been there for 4 months and is still an issue, but they don't have kids. He was not worth the risk to my 4 year old son - who got...

    Canadians check in here....

Hi Corinna, I am getting chicks from Frey's through the Home Hardware in Inverary and in June from Performance Poultry in Prince Edward County - first time ordering from either of them - I'll let you know how that goes. Another good source is Dave at Prelude Kennels in Gananoque - he has a mix...

A Guide to Humidity, Weighing and Lockdown.

Hi there, I am incubating chicken eggs for the first time. All my eggs are brown or blue so I have a hard time candling. I have been weighing and am on day 14. Most of the eggs are right on target for about 10% weight loss at this stage. 2 eggs have no weight loss since the start - does that...

care to share your silkie crosses?

When crossing a silkie roo, are you generally able to avoid the vaulted skull? I just had to put down my silike hen who kept getting neurological damage from the roos mounting her - she was so bad at the end, she was just sprawled out on the ground - it was heartbreaking. I can't go through...

Teeny tiny first egg from old english game hen

I got an old english game hen from a show in September, she's a year and half old. The last few days she's been hanging around the coop looking for a quiet spot. Yesterday I saw her leave from behind the nesting boxes and there was this teeny, teeny egg! The first she's laid for me - man, is it...

    Canadian Soap Makers!! question ;0)

You may have already found a source, but I just noticed your thread. I found lye once at an old style hardware store. A more reliable Canadian source though is Canwax. http://www.canwax.com/ They also have great supplies and scents. A huge hit for us is the Muskoka Boathouse - it really does...

Ok really! WHO IS SICK OF IT?! ~UPDATED!~

I started with 4 week old chicks this summer, a mix of them, plus a few laying ladies so I wouldn't go crazy waiting. My chickies are now 5 1/2 months and only 2 of the Ameraucanas have just started laying. Every few nights when they come in to roost I come in and do a 'gynecological exam'...

    26-week old ameraucana not laying

I have an easter egg hunt each day, but fortunately just in the coop! They have laid in the nesting boxes where the other chickens lay, behind the nesting boxes and in the open top of a full bale of wood shavings. I've seen one the them in there go from one spot to another, a bit too shy to try...

    Canadians check in here....

I got an aquarium heater from ebay and I'm going to try that. I use a large bucket with nipples, that seems fine so far but I'll put the heater in the bucket soon. The coop pop door is open all the time for them to go back in. Then I bring out some water to put in a large dish outside. I don't...

True Ameraucana: How many wks old to lay eggs?

Mine are 25 weeks and 2 of the 3 just started laying. The girls are still pretty small and their eggs are small too, but in the first week I got 6 eggs! I had heard that if they reach laying age in the fall, they may not start until spring, so I wasn't hopeful about getting any blue eggs this year.

    Canadians check in here....

I'm in the Kingston, Ontario area and new to keeping chickens - this will be our first winter. I'm not planning to heat, I'm more concerned about shoveling a path to the coop!
