    automatic door back in business

the last week the door has been off line. opens when it wants, closes when it wants. chickens locked in, chickens locked out. what a mess! i could NOT get it to re-program. finally called the manufacturer & he talked me through my problems. i hadn't lubricated the pin at the bottom. duh...

what finish weight should i look for in my dual purpose birds at 20 -22 wks

after processing, what weight should my birds be approximately? they are free range. free choice flock raiser, once a day scratch thrown out. breeds include: silver laced w. , Delaware, black australorp, and buff orpington. I think they may be small. I see no sign of worms in their stool &...

    they're so cute

I had to go out to close my automatic pop door (accidentally disconnected it). everybody in their place. gabby, my silver laced w. as usual running her mouth (hence her name), mama (buff orp) has her two babies tucked into a nest box with her, the twelve half grown chicks perched on every...

peace - now that the rooster is gone

Charlie was a good rooster but not for my little flock. now, everyone is in the coop at night again. everyone is safely locked up & I don't have to worry about them in the night. it is such a relief. my flock isn't as safe without a "protector", but for a time, i'm going to enjoy the peace...

the australorp was a jersey giant

I very recently removed Charlie from my flock. he was so brutal to my girls & one is actually showing signs of being crippled. he was just so huge. never having had a rooster before of any breed, I thought he was australorp because that was what I bought (I thought). thanks to ridgerunner...

had t cull my rooster this evening

this was so hard to do. he was a year old. he was so brutal to the girls he was tearing them up. he was never mean to people - very stand-offish, but never once offered to attack. I just couldn't let them keep being hurt by him. this is a part of keeping animals I hate.

    there are babies under there

I heard little peeps from the nest today. one poked it's little black head out for a moment. he looked just like daddy. can't wait to see what happens tomorrow. she has been such a dedicated broody. i'm so proud of her. she is so cute. she relaxes & dozes off. suddenly you see movement...

is my hen going to die from being broody?

she's a buff orp. this is her first time. she's got about 10 days to go before babies should hatch. she rarely comes off the nest. her comb is pale (was bright red). I fear she's starving & thirsting herself to death. I try to hand feed her & she takes some on occasion. I try to give her...

almost burned my chickens to death today

a cold front has blown through. electricity was knocked out & my chicks were cold. I used a new propane heater. it was hotter than I realized. it melted the plastic pine shavings bag & the wood chips were starting to smell. I had gone out multiple times because I was uncomfortable w/this...

did they sneak some meatie chicks in on me?

on impulse I bought 4 buff orp, 4 silver laced wyandottes, & 4 Delaware chicks at the feed store. all same size. one slw died first day. after a couple of weeks I now see that I have 1 buff orp, 3 red sex link, & I don't know what the "Delaware" are. the Delaware are a lot bigger than the...

dominant hen wants broody to get off eggs so she can sit on them for a little while

twice this Wyandotte hen has hassled the broody to the point of getting off her eggs. the Wyandotte will then sit on the eggs for 2 to 3 hours. she then gets off & goes her merry way. meanwhile the broody sits in another nest & doesn't go back. I gently pull her out of the second nest & put...

what size for a grow out pen?

wondering how people have managed their growing chicks before they're big enough to join the grown ups. I've got to get something built asap. my dirty dozen are ready to leave the brooder when the last of the cold spells blow through & I haven't figured out a good temp housing for them yet.

do i need to intervene w/broody hen?

she is suddenly for the first time broody. I've never had a broody before. do I need to help her eat & drink or will she take care of herself? how many eggs can she incubate (she's a buff orp, so she's on the big side)?

does broodiness advance until they stay on the eggs?

my buff orp has been spending more and more time on the nest. yesterday she stayed all day so I thought she had decided to 'get er done'. this morning I found that she was on the roost all night & the eggs were of course cold. do you think she will continue until she figures this out?

how to cull without a cone?

I don't want to spend the money on a cone ($35.00 before shipping/handling). I don't have bleach bottles. I don't have a traffic cone. how else do I end my rooster? I think I need to get this done. it's very difficult for me to do this. I want to make sure I make it as quick & humane as...

    define a "good" rooster please

are they easy with the mating? my guy is so rough & their backs are bare. they try to get away & they squawk w/pain sometimes. at first I thought it was because he is so big, but he's hard on them. how do "good" roosters go about the business of mating? I've got a dozen chicks coming...

rooster is too hard on new hen

i'm having complete failure integrating her into flock because of the rooster. I had thought so highly of him, but he's so rough w/her, she fears for her life & runs as far away as she can. the rooster is one year old. do they mellow or is this how it will be?

new hen, new chicks, old flock

trying to integrate a new hen into a small flock that's been together since day one. she's a buff orp. she's the lone survivor of a coyote attack & the neighbor wants her to have a new home. it's not going so well. at the same time, I've got 12 chicks. she's now sitting on top of their...
