I purchased 40 pounds of DT from local elevator for $20.00. Food grade smood grade, just don't breath the dust when mixing. 1/2 pound DT to 50 pounds layer, I feed all the time, my girls are doing very well. I also mix at same rate for my grains, 60% cracked corn, 30% whole oats and 10% wheat...
10 weeks ago I purchased 25 freedom ranger chicks, received 26. Just took them to processor yesterday, had 26 processed birds 112.5 pounds total, 4.33 pounds average dressed, did not weigh live, processor claims 75% of live weight. We are in an area that doesn’t allow roosters, I asked on this...
Just finished my first 10 week try with broilers, received 26 chicks and ended up with 26 processed birds. 112.5 pounds of processed meat, 4.33 pound average. Picked up birds yesterday from processor and excitedly cooked one of the smaller birds on the grill, meat was though, really kind of...
I have a friend that grew up on a farm with lots of chickens. I was complaining one day this summer about my girls not laying, he told me to place a stone egg in the boxes. I know it sounds silly but the day after I placed the stone egg we had an egg, next day three and so on all summer with an...

We live in E. Lansing (about as far East as you can get) 1/2 block from Haslett. Just started with the girls this spring. Good to know more people in area.
We got our girls at two weeks old in the first week of March this year. They had never seen snow before, I did not let them out for the 3 days after a pretty big snow. First few steps were very tentative. They are so amazing, after an hour they were all over the yard. In a few more hours they...
I have posted about our hawk problem in the past. CDs hung around yard work fine, no attempted attacks since 20th CD placed. Finally got a good photo of the culprit.
Young Red-Tail I think.
I purchased whole oats from my local elevator, chickens love them. So I tried sprouting them in a mason jar on its side on the window sill, no luck (maybe too cold?). Thought sprouts would be a great winter pick-me-up for the girls. Anybody sprouting oats successfully?
Writing back about heating the coop. I placed a thing called a Thermo Cube (on at 35 and off at 45 degrees) attached to heat lamp, this morning it finally got cold enough in coop for it to come on, all the girls were outside. I guess they really dont need any extra heat.
I have used a large live trap for many years, caught lots of critters. Problem being what the heck to do with them after I caught them. I take them to a park about 5 miles from house, got caught letting a raccoon go by the ranger, he was not happy and asked me to stop. I still do it but am more...
Try hanging some of the CDs high in a tree, maybe 15 to 20 feet up. I have had no hawk problems since doing that. Umbrellas sound like a good idea, have heard of concrete blocks with pallets on top to make hides for your chickens. My girls use the fence to run along when scared, plus we have...

I think the question THe Fox is really asking is whether an animal could have hauled it off, and you never really answered his question. Any reason to suspect a human for the hen versus an animal?
Oh I have another thread about the hen, before I noticed the trap missing too.
I didn't...
chickenlover237 I think that about the only thing you can do is build a strong run, and keep them inside all the time. My run is made of pressure treated 2X4s and ½ inch hardware cloth (galvanized welded wire fencing) with 2X4 inch wire fencing on the bottom to keep anything big from digging...
We have 11 hens with 4X6 foot coop + 3 laying boxes with a total of 2X4 feet, and a enclosed run of 8X12 feet. We free range an average of 5 days a week. Flock shows no sign of stress.
