    Tough broilers

Just finished my first 10 week try with broilers, received 26 chicks and ended up with 26 processed birds. 112.5 pounds of processed meat, 4.33 pound average. Picked up birds yesterday from processor and excitedly cooked one of the smaller birds on the grill, meat was though, really kind of...

Girls first snow experience (lots of photos)

We got our girls at two weeks old in the first week of March this year. They had never seen snow before, I did not let them out for the 3 days after a pretty big snow. First few steps were very tentative. They are so amazing, after an hour they were all over the yard. In a few more hours they...

    Unwanted guest

I have posted about our hawk problem in the past. CD’s hung around yard work fine, no attempted attacks since 20th CD placed. Finally got a good photo of the culprit. Young Red-Tail I think.

    Sprouting oats

I purchased whole oats from my local elevator, chickens love them. So I tried sprouting them in a mason jar on its side on the window sill, no luck (maybe too cold?). Thought sprouts would be a great winter pick-me-up for the girls. Anybody sprouting oats successfully?

    Pasture potatoes

We have a friend that raised 100 meat birds this summer, 16 weeks to butcher. I have heard that some of the heritage breeds take a little longer but are more robust. Our friend had lots of leg problems. I heard heritage breeds are less likely to have these problems? What breeds do you suggest...

    Vinyl floor = easy cleanup

I really thought my wife was crazy when she said she wanted a vinyl floor in the new coop. I do the cleanup and it is so much easier.

    No Roosters

Our county allows hens but no roosters if you have less than 5 acres. We purchased 12 chicks this spring, one was a rooster, he went to a friend’s farm. I see no way around this, hens make enough noise without a rooster. Anybody else have same problem.

    Red-tail hawk problems

Have small flock, 11 hens, no roosters allowed in my neighborhood. 4 unsuccessful hawk attacks that I have seen. Since attacks started, I have been keeping hens in a closed run, but they have been free ranging until now. Red-tails are protected by the Migratory Bird Act. Not going to kill the...

Have timer set to open at 7am and close at 12 midnight, sometimes all are inside, sometimes one or more stuck outside all night. Any suggestions on how to get them all inside every time?
