Can a chicken be in a coma?

I know this is a really stupid question. My chicken was attacked by a fox yesterday. I got her before she was eaten, but she is in rough shape. Her external wounds are not awful, but I'm wondering if she has a broken neck or is in some kind of coma or something. She has her eyes closed most...

    Darn Fox-broken neck?

I've had two attacks this week, so I've learned my lesson and am not letting anyone out of the coops for a while. I lost a large chinese goose (caught the fox with her and got her away, but she died soon after). Yesterday, the fox got one of my very large chickens. I ran after him/her and I...

advice needed-broody hen,day olds and bad descision

Ugh. I've had chickens for a couple of years and I feel like I'm never going to figure this out. I have a broody black astralorp. She has been sitting on golf balls and eggs for two weeks. (I've tried to take the eggs so they don't incubate too long). I don't mind that she is broody...

attacked by fox- now maggots in wound! ARGH!

While I was away this past weekend, someone let my chickens out (I can not let them out in the spring- the fox is relentless). I lost a duck and a chicken. Another chicken was definitely attacked but survived. Today she smells like she is rotting and I found a maggot in her wound. OMG...

    It's cold! Broody hen ok?

I have a 8/9 month old Black Australorp who has gone broody a few times before but she stopped once I took the eggs. I accidentally left one of my nest boxes for a few days last week and she has been sitting on eggs. She had 3 golf balls under her, along with 8 eggs (one I broke). I candled...

    New ducks- question about shelter

I have acquired a Cayuga and Magpie and am wondering about housing. We live on a 3 acre pond, and I would like to keep the ducks out without a run. Is it possible to put a "house" close enough to the side of the pond that if a predator comes they can just go in the water? I know we have fox...

    Beating myself up.

I'm so upset with myself. My eggs were 36 hours over due (I only had 2). I had really thought that they stopped developing around day 17 because when I candled them they didn't move and didn't seem to be growing. On day 22 1/2 I did the float test and they failed (or so I thought). I wanted...

    Taking incubator on vacation?

So weird- I know. We are going skiing about two hours away ( for 2 days) and I have eggs that are supposed to hatch the day we get back. POOR planning, but since my roo was killed by a fox, I needed to act fast and I was waiting for one of my chickens to start laying again. Anyway, my...

    Hurt goose- need advice!

I have two pet Canada geese that live outside along with wild geese. We have a 3 acre pond that has recently started to freeze. My pet geese are still young and are not familiar with the ice. My girl, is cut up and can not walk at all. I can see a cut on her leg ( not too bad) and there is...

Hen hates coop/wants to sleep in holly tree

I got a new hen about a month ago. She does not get along with my others. (I had 4, but down to two). She prefers to be by herself all day (they free range), and if they are in the coop, she is picked on. She refuses to go in the coop unless I force her. I guess this is why she was given...

    Rooster help

I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times....sorry. I'm new to chickens. Earlier this year, I purchased some pullets. Needless to say, my Buff Orpington is not a hen, it's a rooster. He is beautiful and very nice with people and my dominique, but he is aggressive to my 3 others. They...

Beautiful and friendly 9mo. Buff Orpington Rooster PA

Unfortunately we thought Henry was Henrietta when we got her at 6 weeks. He is a wonderful rooster...and gorgeous! He is used to free ranging during the day, but definitely needs a safe home for the evenings. We live in the Philadelphia area (Main Line).

    assisted hatch help

I know better than to get to involved and try to help, but I did anyway. I had an egg that had internally pipped for two days. I became crazed and instead of just letting it be, I made a tiny air hole in the top of the egg. There was a little blood so I immediately put it back and let it be ...

I went to put my chickens back in their coop tonight and noticed that my Buff Orphington has a pretty significant bump over her eye. Any ideas what I can do to help? Thanks so much!

    photo- is she ok?

My 12 week old Silver Laced Wyandote and Buff Orphington both have fleshy patches on their faces. I'm new to chickens and have no idea if this is normal looking or not. Is this ok or do you think another chicken is pecking them? Thanks!

    I need help!

I pulled 3 goose eggs out of our pond the other day. Their nest was flooded in a storm. I have been keeping them warm with pillowcases of warmed rice and a heating pad. I know it's so strange. Anyway, I don't know that I was thinking. They are still alive and growing. I have done...

    I'm crazy- goose egg question

I live on a pond and have a pair of Canadian geese that I feed (I know most hate them). The reason we accept these two is because they are very territorial and chase off the hundreds of other geese that come here. They have made a nest and were laying eggs (I only let her keep 3). It is...

    Showed up at work! questions

Hi! My husband has a construction business and his office is in a very commercial/industrial area. The other day a beautiful hen showed up in the shop! Everyone thought it was a rooster, but I think it's a hen. I tried to post a photo, but can't. Anyway, she is very, very friendly and...
