    Tractor or Permanent Coop?

I am having trouble deciding on which to build. I like the idea of a tractor a lot so the grass will grow back. I will only have 3 hens. My property is about a little more than an acre cleared. Will they destroy the grass with a tractor? I want them to help the yard not make it bare! :) Advice...

    Safe to eat?

Is it safe to eat a rooster who has a small case of bumblefoot? I'm tired of his attitude and don't want to deal with fixing him.

    Tiny red bugs?

Today I processed 2 birds. The first one I didn't see any bugs on him, but the second one had lots of these tiny red bugs on his legs. I checked a couple of my other chickens and a few have the same thing on their legs and butts. No one is acting sickly and everyone looks healthy otherwise. What...

How long until able to process free range cornish x?

This is my first time raising CX and I admit I was expecting lazy, Godzilla size chickens. They aren't! The hatchery the feed store ordered them from is Ideal. Before bringing them home, I thought they would be ready to process the second week of July. They are not very big right now, so I am...

Brown Female Muscovy - New Hampshire

My male Muscovy was taken by a fox today and I need to rehome my female now. She is very sweet, but a bit wild as she does enjoy flying around a little everyday. I would like her to go to a home with other ducks and not be eaten please.

    Prolapsed vent on 2 chickens?

My EE sister chickens today both had prolapsed vents. I culled both of them. Do you think it's genetic or something I can do to help prevent this in my other chickens? I think it might be genetic because their mother died from the same thing. Just want to make sure though.

    So upset!

My conure has flown away! It's my fault too. I forgot to close his cage door and opened the back door to go outside. He flew right out. Of course last night would be a night we had a thunderstorm. He was so high in a tree last night I couldn't get him and now he's gone completely. I have no idea...

Something I thought was amusing today

My Muscovy drake Louie finally got a hold of his Muscovy girl, Mavis. He was doing his business on top of her, but when he went to get off of her back she took off running. He was still "attached" and starting making loud noises while trying to get away from her. He ended up flopped on his side...

    Burying eggs?

I have one funny EE who buries eggs in the nest box. She will lay an egg and afterwards collects pine shavings to bury her egg and any others in that box. Before I realized she was doing this, I would miss the eggs! Now everyday I have to dig for them. What is up with this?

Can different size breeds live together happily?

Maybe it is a silly question. I had 3 Muscovies, but 2 were eaten by a predator. The third was attacked at the same time, but flew away and come home later that night with minor neck injuries. She is healed up and her neck feathers are growing back in. I can tell she is lonely even though she...

WTB: Large female duck in NH

Looking for an adult, large female duck to be a companion for my female Muscovy. I would prefer a muscovy, but I will consider any large breed. Thank you!

Do my ducks need their own coop?

This has been going on for weeks now and we are fed up! Our 3 ducks will not go in the coop at night. They sit together in the middle of the yard and we have to catch them. We only have to catch one and the other will follow into the coop. They share the coop with my 13 chickens. I know the...

    McMurray homesteader delight

Just wondering if anyone has ordered this before. It comes with 10 brown egg layers, 2 geese, 2 turkeys, and 2 ducks. Are the geese, ducks, and turkeys they send good meat birds? I'm interested in everything except the chickens. It would be the perfect number of holiday birds for us without...

How to help a cracked beak?

In the past couple of hours my white Muscovy has managed to somehow crack her beak. Is there anything I should do or put on it? It doesn't seem to bother her. Here is a picture of the crack: The crack is at the top of the blood and the rest is a dried blood trail.

    Proud of myself!

Yesterday I processed my first chickens! They belonged to a local farm who will teach anyone who wants to learn. :) It was very easy! My '7 piece chicken nuggets' will be ready to be processed in November. Can't wait! My DH thought I was going to come home with my mind changed about eating them...

    What could have done this?

We came home the other day and found our black silkie dead in the yard. Feathers were everywhere, including some RIR feathers. She looked like she had been partly plucked, her stomach was opened and mostly eaten. Our other chickens and ducks were hiding under our deck unharmed. DH thinks it was...

When to give them swimming water?

I have muscovy ducklings. I was told when I bought them not to let them swim until they have all of their feathers or they will drown. True? They spend all day sitting by the waterer and thanks to them we go through 3+ gallons a day. Also do they need swimming water in the winter? I live in NH.

    Hens stopped laying in coop...

...and I don't know how to make them start back. They stopped when 1 of my silkies went broody and banned the rest of the hens from laying in all the nest boxes. She has been moved and 2 silkies are laying in there again. However, my BO and RIR are laying all over the yard (6 acres). As soon as...
