Can someone please help me find out what this raptor is?

Vultures do not swoop down and attack living creatures. They are natures scavengers, eating only what is already dead.

Ideal Poultry's chicks and ducks, this happen to you?

Never ever ever give chicks layer ration. They cannot process the extra calcium, and it can kill or seriously injure them. Talk about a mass die off .....

Roo or Pullet and 1 other question

I'd say thats probably a roo, but even pullets of the same age develop their comb and wattles at different rates. How old were they when you received them? Also, a photo of the back and wings would help in identifying the sex. RIR roo's backs have a more course/rough feathering than...

    Posting pics..

What are you using for litter? In the photo it sure looks a lot like their food. I hope they don't decide to eat it.

What takes Blu Kote off of skin?

I too have suffered the Blu Kote curse. Looked like I had just voted in Iraq's 1st election, and several times at that. I tried soap and water, alcohol, you name it, but nothing worked. What finally removed it was taking a shower and washing my hair. I guess hair acts as a mild...

What type of print is this?

Previous posters are correct in saying canine. Odds are that its a big dog.

    2x4 for roost?

I use 2x4s such that they are roosting on the 3.5" side. A lot of times the 2x2 have very sharp corner edges, and therefore need to be rounded down a bit with a chisel and hammer, or a wood planer, before being used.

Building windows, or is it okay to be dark?

Don't worry about the crabgrass, the chickens will eliminate it in less than a week. As for sod, forget that too, as it will end up being very expensive chicken greens. They will eat the leaves and dig up the roots. It does not stand a chance unless you free range over a much larger...

    I hate the Post Office

My post office has always been very professional when receiving my chick orders. If you had a bad experience, and the eggs were properly packaged and protected then call your postmaster and inform him or her. They do care. They get enough bad publicity as it is.

    Should I keep my rooster?

The sound of the roosters in the morning is just one of many reasons that I have chickens. It just wouldn't be the same without them. When I was young and would stay overnight with my grandparents, the train would wake me up .... but quickly you get used to it and sleep right on through it.

not sure if soft shell or eating eggs?

Soft shelled eggs happen for no real apparent reason from time to time. Just clean up all of the remnants as soon as possible. I wouldn't worry too much unless you start finding good eggs that have been partially eaten. Feeding too many scraps can contribute to thin or soft shells.

    What kind of poisen?

Katy, I just called a friend who had a similar problem last year. He suggested gluing sticky rodent trap/pads 12 inches or so into a 3-4 inch diameter section of PVC pipe laid against the wall, and bait it with your poultry feed. Put the bait in the middle of the pipe and the sticky traps...

    What kind of poisen?

From the Eradibait FAQ: Effective control is achieved with up to 40-60 grams of product per rat and 10-15 grams per mouse. Thats a pound of the stuff for every 7-8 rats. I hope the rodents think it tastes better than your poultry feed, because they'll sure need to have quite a large feast...

    What kind of poisen?

Coke sounds like an urban legend, and eradibait sounds as safe and effective as DDT . Remember when we could still use that? It was virtually non toxic to everything except mosquitos; never mind the effect on bald eagle eggs.

Can you mix vaccinated chicks with nonvacc. flock?

No problem at all when they are older. The new chicks will have a degree of protection from the diseases for which they were vaccinated, and the older ones will not.

    Island Coop

Very cool! My wife and I have visited Maine numerous times. We love Monhegan Island. While out there last summer we saw a flock of free ranging barred rocks and then another even larger mixed flock penned in one of the residents yards. The lady at the art shop said that the only...

Can you mix vaccinated chicks with nonvacc. flock?

The challenge period for most vaccines is about 12-16 days, meaning that vaccine does not provide full protection until that time has passed. Prior to this, your new (vaccinated) birds should be kept away from the non-vaccinated birds. Of course, always sanitize your equipment before...

    Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacteria common to chickens, although it rarely exists in concentrations sufficient to cause harm. Nevertheless, be prudent. Wash your hands after handling your birds, wash any visible feces from the eggs just before using them, use water that is warmer then the egg...

    What kind of poisen?

I would never use a rifle round (22 is a rifle round) for rat control, especially fired out of a pistol. Use a shotgun with low brass dove load. Its effective killing range is only about 45 yards, you wont miss, and you wont have a ricochet kill the neighbor. Rat shot loads, as...
