Lethargic Older Chick - Not sure if Cocci?

Ok, so the chick did die (actually, we had to take it out of it's misery in the morning. It couldn't even swallow the water, poor girl). My next questions is, How long do I need to treat the rest of the flock before I can assume they have immunity? All the others are doing great, no symptoms...

Lethargic Older Chick - Not sure if Cocci?

Hi All! I have a 6 week old chick who seems to be showing signs of cocci - lethargic, neck stretched, drooping wings, laying down. I've brought her inside, started all chicks on Corid & electrolytes - using a dropper on the weak chick. The other chicks seem fine, but treating all anyway. My...

giving chicks to non broody hen

OK, so I know this is not standard practice, but I am wondering if anyone has ever SUCCESSFULLY tried placing incubator hatched chicks under a hen that is not broody. I finally found someone locally who was selling BCM eggs for $1 each and I bought 15. I did a hatch last year, so I'm getting...

NON Emergency - Hens losing back feathers, probable overmating

Hi all - just trying to confirm what I suspect. Several of my older hens (last years spring chicks) have bald red patches on their lower back, above their tail. I don't see any other indication of mites, although they all need a good dusting. I have around 6-8 laying hens, 6 more starting...

    3 Americana Roos

I'm not sure I know how to answer your question. They are chickens that I bought so I could have blue eggs, but I don't need the males. They currently live in the hen house with all my hens and 2 BCM Roos. Does that answer?

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Here's a picture of my poor chickie. The one at the bottom is the chick I'm trying to save. I did all the cracking, the entire pipping hole was crusty. The membrane has separated in a few places and no blood is coming out but when I gently squeeze, a slimy bubble of bloody gunk comes out at...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

So, my incubator chicks are starting to hatch. About 24 hours early. I woke up this morning and one had a 1/2" hole. 12 hours later it's exactly the same. I examined it and found hardened bubbles - like the chick had been breathing through the mucus. I carefully broke off the hard bubbles...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Here is a photo of the 1st chick (to survive). I got a glimpse of the black one under Mama, but he's not coming out. The white one is hot, it's got to be at least 100 in that coop, so she is out. Also, I got the brooder set up complete with water park and a condo!

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I was thinking. With my spring mail-order chicks, I had them in the brooder inside the run, and when I finally let them out to mingle - things went better than they might have. I have a solid-top pallet in the run for chicks to hide under, and that worked...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Thanks so much for the advice! At this point, she is down to 2 - one egg that is hatched, and one with a 1/2" hole and beak poking out. So she ought to be finished hatching by tonight. I have always started my chicks directly on my Aqua Miser nipples with no problem, and I have 2 low nipples...

Here is my CL ad. I Have 3 beautiful Americana Roosters, just now starting to fight with my flock roos and mount the girls. They are appx. 16 weeks old. I got them as chicks this spring, straight run from TSC - I'm keeping the ladies. Very healthy and gorgeous! South of Lexington, KY...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Mama threw out another chick - she pecked it's leg off... Cold and dead when I found it. I was getting pretty concerned, but she has a peeper under her, and I managed to brave her fury and lift her up. She has one chick, whole, well and 1/2 dry which she carefully tucked back under her...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Yes, first chick had definitely died, threw it out. Then an egg that was supposed to hatch today exploded on me as I moved it from the turner... still ventilating the house. Mama won't let me near her, so I guess time will tell!

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Thanks! I'm pretty sure my first little guy died. I left him in the incubator last night, but he had stopped breathing. Either from cold, or because when I took the shell I removed the rest of the slime from the navel before it dried up, and he bled. Obviously I see that I shouldn't do that...

early hatching, bloody navel, hen hatch

Hi everyone! This is my first hatch. My hen went broody, so we gave her 12 eggs. She got rid of 4, then 2 exploded - rotten. She is not due to hatch until Wednesday, but it is Sunday night and I just went out to find a partially hatched chick that she must have thrown out, on the sawdust...

What size fence squares for chickens?

We went with 8 strands of zereba electric , about 4-6" apart. With fiberglass posts, insulators,.charger, etc we spent $400 to make an 80x80 pasture divided in two lots for rotating. They got out for a few days, but they are used to it now, and I only have a couple of escapes per week.

Selling excess flock at flea markets etc

My local tractor supply store hosts animal swaps occasionally. I think people just show up with whatever they have. You could see if any of you're stores do that.
