I have one speckled sussex in my flock, and I agree, she's very friendly. And very talkative. I'm to the point that I can identify many of my birds by their sounds, she's my favorite though.

    Keeping food in feeder?

I've noticed that my flock tends to be very messy and wasteful if I feed them crumble, but when I switch to pellets there really isn't any waste. I have 4ea 5 gallon feeders hanging, and there really isn't any food that gets spilled, the few pellets that do fall out, are usually eaten right away.

    cornish X

I decided to try raising some Cornish Cross this spring, I purchase 20 of these mutants. I'm having issues with them, they are around 4 weeks old, eat like dinosaurs, and this weekend I lost quite a few. As in 7 keeled over, deader then dead. I'm guessing I screwed up and overfed them. New incubator

I'm looking around for some fertile eggs, and realized I'd like to have a handy book around to help answer my incubation questions. Anyone have some suggestions on reputable books that would help with this? Thank you

I did the old fashioned test last week, one of the 3 I cracked had a chick :(. My hen thought she was bigger, she attempted to set on 26 eggs, so...

I have a hen that started getting really broody about a month ago. I let her start setting, and even snuck in a couple eggs to speed things up. I currently have one rooster mixed in with about 30 hens. I realize the ratio is off, however he started as a "she" and I decided that one rooster was...

    Urp... fertile egg?

Good points, thanks for taking time to explain that. I'll try to get some information tomorrow. For giggles I made a home made candler tonight with my kids. It was interesting to look at the eggs, but unless there was a Sasquatch growing I'm not so sure I"d have seen anything :).

    Urp... fertile egg?

I have approx 45 chickens, 2 of which are roosters. I collect eggs daily, I sift through the nest litter to make sure there aren't any hidden eggs. One of my customers told me today that they cracked an egg a couple days ago and found a developing chick... I'm perplexed. How would that happen, I...
