Thank you for your reply. I'm sure they're made by Farm Innovators; I'm not sure anybody else makes them! However, they're at least a year old, and probably older. I thought maybe the heating element itself would be pretty cheap- it doesn't look all that complex, but I have no idea what it...
I have several heated dog type waterers that I use for my chickens in the winter. Right now I have three that quit working. The electronics don't seem to be too complicated, but does anyone have any idea what I could use to replace the element? I'm not sure if the thermostat part just quit or...
I'm in northeast Ohio- Wayne County. I used to have several hundred chickens, among other things, but I'm down to maybe 70 right now. I really want to get some of my breeds separated out so I can start hatching- if these crazy cold temperatures ever go away!
We've used these for quite a while now, although we made a wood frame that fits around the outside, then covered it with wire. When we feel energetic, we even make a little door in the wire- it makes it easier to get feed and water in. We had to cover ours- the cats were just too interested...
I just started growing fodder about two weeks ago. I'm loving it so far! I'm alternating BOSS and wheat. Unfortunately, barley is pretty impossible to find in my area. The chickens still aren't real sure about it, but they seem to be eating more and more.
I was worried with the snap traps that I'd end up catching a chicken. Has this been a problem, or how do you avoid it? I guess there are a couple of places that I could possibly hide the trap that the chickens couldn't reach. I haven't had any success yet with the baited traps I set out a...
Thanks for the idea- sounds like a great one. I did go buy a couple of the rat traps tonight- the kind with the bait hidden inside. Hopefully they'll take care of the problem very quickly. I might look into your PVC pipe one, too- could use a few more for the other coops.
My daughter put poison out last year, but didn't shove it far enough into the rat holes, and I ended up losing a few chickens. So I'm hesitant to try the poison route. We're having rat problems now- I'm going to go buy traps. I know the rats won't generally disturb the birds, but they do eat...
I'm going to try this. My daughter went out to shut up the chickens tonight and saw four rats in the coop! Yuck! I knew we had some- one of the barn cats killed one in that coop recently- but I had no idea it was that bad. We used poison last year, but then a few of my chickens died within...
My daughters and I built my 8 X 12 coop a few years ago, and it cost me about $500. It's always better to err on the side of building larger rather than smaller! Chickens have a way of becoming addictive!!
I'm in northeast Wayne Co, in northeast Ohio. I have more chickens than I care to count, along with guineas, muscovy ducks, and Pilgrim geese. My daughter has ducks, mostly runners at this point in time, and Sebastopol geese.
I've browsed this site before many times but never bothered to register. I'm looking to buy some hatching eggs, so finally bit the bullet.
I've had chickens for years. I started in 1995, when we finally moved to a couple of acres. We moved to Texas a few years later, so just got back into...
