Ten hens in a run a little bit bigger than a 30x7 foot rectangle that gets bigger at one end (it widens to about 15').
Two coops attached: One built to accommodate 20 hens, the other 5 hens.
I feed them layer crumbles, bird seed treats, kitchen/garden scraps and oyster shell.
Hope that helps...
They can't free range.
I give them kitchen scraps and treats multiple times a day.
Sometimes one will give a peck to another to get at the treats, even though there is plenty to go around.
But the majority of the pecking is at other times.
My hens are pecking each other bare!
It started with just a couple of hens being pecked on the back.
I put Blu-Kote on the bare spots and separated them but the pecking has spread to the tails, wings and necks of ALL OF THE HENS NOW.
I put another feeder in the run and I have plans to make...

A couple of my Ameracauna hens just will not be left alone by the other hens.
I have isolated her/them until she/they heal up and get the feathers back.
But as soon as they are all together it starts all over again.
Is there some kind of deterrent, or are we going to have to build another run...
Thanks for the great posts, and keep'em coming!
My family had a few when I was young, so I know how much care they require.
I really think I like Nubians for looks and personality so far.
How is the fat separated from the milk, I remember it being pretty much
pre-homogenized?
My Ameraucanas will make a sound that is like a very loud and sharp "PEEP"!
It looks like they might be sneezing when they make that sound.
It cracks me up every time!
I'm kind of confused, here is why:
My EE was the first to lay and her eggs were always green, could she have changed? I can't say that I have actually seen one of her green eggs in a week or so. (Her eggs have always been a certain color and shape, distinct from the others)
Can one of my...
Every few days I am getting an extra brown egg.
Is the EE or Ameraucanas laying brown instead of green, or is one of the reds laying an extra egg?
I made an earlier post with more details, subject line: "Laying double or change of color?"
Thanks
Okay, I am having some odd things happen with my girl's egg laying.
Is one of my reds laying twice a day, or is my EE or one of my Ameraucanas changed to laying brown instead of green?
Here is the background, can this riddle be solved?
I have five Production Reds, four Ameraucanas, and one...
Here are more pics:
The first is the "odd ball" hen.
The second is of two of the (true?) Ameraucanas with their muffs out.
Are the "muffs" and the blue/slate leg color versus the no muffs and green leg color the only way to be sure of the true Ameraucana breed?
Yes, they have free-choice Oyster Shell, they eat layer crumbles and pellets. And I also bake and pulverize their shells and mix them into their feed.
We don't give them grit because we have everything from boulders to dust here.
All of the other shells are extremely strong, it was just this...
We were told she was an Ameraucana, but I can't say I have ever seen her "muffs" out.
She is the hen in front, the other hen has her "muffs" out.
Any thoughts/question?
Thanks!
