YES....!!! Our eggs are worth about $8.00 a piece, we guess, as we laugh our way to the poor house! Not only the coop's lumber, lighting, and all the hard wire we used, but the feed costs, and the human food our chickens eat, is really a cost factor in having our chickens. Instead of farm...
Yes, I read that too... Never really worked for me... It's best never to have a lonely only chicken. No matter when you introduce them to a new flock there will always be some testing and picking. It's just that way. I've tried to keep them separate with a wire fence separating the two for 2...
Get yourself a silkie hen and I promise, she will go broody for you every 2 months or so... LOL... They are wonderful mothers. Of the nearly 3 dozen chickens we have, I have 3 broodies: a silkie, an orpington, and a black sex link something... LOL... I could have chicks at least 3 times a year...
We had 6 guineas. Now that they are 7-8 months old, they are turning a bit mean. I notice they often ostracize one of my sweet hens to the outer yards, and she often flys over the fence. What is with this behavior? I think I have but one male in the bunch.
Get them out of the box real soon. Put your chicks in a protected 6 sided quarter inch wire box with a lid, and attach the brooder light in one corner. They can either be under it if cold or away if too warm. Give plenty of fresh food and water, because medicated chick starter feed makes them...
Hey Boo-bear from Conroe.... I live in Conroe, TX also, and also have 5- 3-4 week old silkies. Hello!!! well... I bought my silkies, one of each coler, at Conroe Feeder Supply, and one had a horrible case of pasty-butt, which resulted in her being growth stunted. It took us 5+ days to correct...
If you are talking about chick starter -- who measures the bags?! Just continually make sure their feeders are full, and the waterers freshly filled. I have 3 dozen grown chickens and guineas, plus 5 4-week old silkies. In the winter time when the temps are cold and the chickens are inside...
Is there another compatible breed of bantam to put in with my singleton 3 week old silkie -- that is growth stunted from pasty butt from the feed store where I bought her? Or, is it too late to put another 2-3 week old chicken in with her? One that won't pick on her?
I have always worried about introducing little chicks to the other bigger flock members. I know it doesn't matter when or how, but the little ones will get picked on, eventually, and especially those that are docile. Is there some way you can divide your coop in half, and put the older flock...
I agree with your other poster... Why do you think chickens don't need some heat in their coop in your bitter climate?!! I live near Houston, TX, and yes, our chickens get used to the horrid heat in summers when temps don't drop at night, but also, they have to put up with temps in the 20's...
The feed most likely was moldy, somehow. You probably had no way of knowing...I'd check with where I purchased it. I think what happenned could happen to anyone. ... If you have chickens, I consistently use Layena or Nutrena, and I make sure it is stored inside where I purchase it.
First, gently sand/clean all the wood posts and perches and nest boxes in your coop. (Scaly legs/poor egg laying/loss of feathers, etc... are mostly caused by mites.) Then take some vegetable/animal dust that you can get at Lowe's or your local feed store, and coat the inside of the coop with a...
Help! I purchased 4 silkies at a local feed store. They said they were 3 weeks old. I am not a newcomer to raising chickens or guineas, however, the day after getting the silkies, one had been picked on, and it obviously had pasty butt. I removed the one chicken and have been placing warm water...
