I have Cream Legbars, a new to US breed with some genetic issues. My best rooster, the cleanest dirty shirt, has squirrel tail. I plan to cross him with hens from a different source (direct from Greenfire, Rees line) that don't seem to have this deficit. What can I expect? For example, is...
I received 12 Silver Sebright eggs. 3 of them hatched normally. 2 had were not able to hatch on their own - after 30-36 from when they pecked the first hole through their shell. I assisted these 2 in hatching but breaking the shell for them. They seemed to be glued strongly to the shell...
I live on an unfenced acre of Ag/residential land in south Florida. This morning, when I let my free ranged chickens out they took off so I followed them. My 4 girls made a bee line to a neighboors front step where she leaves food out for a number of cats (and likely wild animals) she feeds -...
If I have 3 groups of chickens, each a different breed and each trained to go back to a different coup, if they free range at the same time will they cross breed? Will the roosters fight or will they mind their own harem and avoid the other groups?
I have a 3 month old pullet with a swollen toe - swollen round ball at the end of her toe. It looks like the toenail got infected. She mostly acts normal but favors her other foot at times and is found sitting down more often then the others. We have been keeping an eye on her. Anything else...
It happened 4 times today. Is this normal? I took the lid off so they can't get stuck. When they are big enough so they can't get their heads in I'll put it back on.
I recently read this awesome post about what to feed chickens:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens
And in it fish are listed but it says they must be cooked. Unlike some of the other restrictions, there is no explanation. If I catch...
If I want to keep (and breed) several different types of chicken and keep them in separate fenced in coups, what would that look like? For example, can you put the coups next to each other and have them share a common fence/wall or will the Rosters from the different flocks go at each other?
I'm new to chickens and have a LG incubator ordered. And now, after the fact, I'm reading about the many challenges and modifications with these incubators and incubators in general. Franky, I and am a little worried.
A lot of the discussions have to do with keeping the temperature...
In December we bought a foreclosed home on an over grown acre of land here in sunny south Florida. About a month ago we purchased our first chicks. We have a dozen red sex linked pullets all happily grazing in the chicken tractor. Good fun! The plan is to let them free range when I am out in...
My wife and I are new to chickens and have had 12 red sex linked chicks for about a week now. They are 3-4 weeks old and fun to watch. We live in south Florida.
