Does anybody or has anybody ever used wood ashes on the floor of their chicken house to absorb moisture and smell. My husband said to mix the ashes with the wood shavings but I'm worried about them maybe getting poisoned. Are wood ashes poisonous? Help, so far I've been using diatomeceous earth...
I'm thinking of trying to hatch my own chicks with a homemade incubator. The hens do not stay on the eggs after they lay them. I have two roosters so i know some of the eggs would be fertile. Has anyone tried??
LOL, Ya it would be defeating the purpose for sure if you went out and bought chicken meat from the store. We raised our own meat birds too but i bought all pullet chicks. Theres only two of us to feed so getting really big birds wasn't necessary.
Ya i hear you there. I raised my layer chicks and meaties together and lost a layer. I think one of the meat birds jumped on her head or somthing. It was nice to just have my 11 hens and 2 roosters. We put 30 meat birds in the freezer last fall. Only got one left and one on the counter for...
I did 30 last fall with the help of my sister-in-law. My husband would have no part of it. Strange because he was a hunting guide for many years but couldn't stomach slaughtering chickens. The only thing i didn't like was how long it took because i didn't have a chicken plucker. An all day job...
LOL, too funny. Ya thats what im using now is an electric dog dish. I was using a 100 watt bulb in a treble light but being enclosed under the chicken waterer caused the thing to get too hot and the wire in the treble light began to melt. A 40 watt bulb works ok but not when it gets minus 25...
Just take 4 bricks and form a square with the hole in the centre then lay in some tin foil and set a treble light down with a 40 watt light bulb. Place your waterer on top and the water wont' freeze
I don`t think thats gonna be warm enough. My chicken house is all boarded with just a couple openings and it got real cold and i quickly insulated as best i could do.I`ve got a little heater in there such til we get through this cold snap
Poor guy. Ya my poor guy got frostbite bad on his comb. Now he looks like this and he wasn't even outside.
I've got a little heater in there now for everyone. Its about minus 8 celsius now.
I hear you there. I used to live in Edmonton and it gets colder there than up here in the Yukon at times. I've lost quite a few eggs to freezing but i just mix it into our pig feed.
