My chicken is eating it's own egg

Thanks for the links. I'm going to try the golf balls first and then, if necessary, the mustard in the egg trick.

    Messy Vent??

have some hens with the same problem. I need to bathe them every few months and they love it. I had never heard of oil or Vaseline until today. This article is about baby chicks, but it applies to the grown-ups as well...

    Outdoor kittens?

I happen to have 3 kittens coming today from a neighbor. I wanted to keep them in the coop with the hay for warmth, but also for mousing. What about diseases? Can the cats and chickens exchange sicknesses? I'm sure fleas/lice/mites can be exchanged? These cats will stay outdoors full-time...

    mites, mites, mites

Discovered yesterday that one of my hens has severe mites, nits on the shafts. Will have to do a thorough cleaning. Thanks for the tips. Is the Nu Stock for IrrItaed bottoms? I don't have Nu Stock and our local store doesn't have it. Would something like utter balm work?

    What went wrong?

Terry, my hens were two this spring, so your article does make sense. It's just hard because she didn't show any signs (that I noticed) and I don't want my other three hens to get sick. Wondering if I should have an internal look at her? I have a friend who's husband might be able to do a...

    What went wrong?

I lost my favorite hen, Miss White, this morning. She's the one in the picture of my avatar. Went out to the coop at 8 and she was still on the roost and very unsteady. I tried to help her down and she basically fell to the ground and couldn't stand or hold her head up. I noticed that under...

    Raccoon IN my coop

Those sound like very inhumane ways to get rid of coons, firestrike. I'm looking for humane ways.

    Raccoon IN my coop

I assume that poison kills quickly? I would hate for them to suffer. Wondering if I should invest in a gun. I took a rifle class earlier this year with my kids' 4H group. Maybe its time. What kind of gun do you suggest? I've never been much of a hunter, but I would be crushed if those coons...

    Raccoon IN my coop

You are all right. The coons came back again last night and were able to break into the coop even though I thought I fixed the door. The drank all the water and ate the feed in the feeder. Thankfully they didn't harm the chickens - this time. I don't want to take anymore chances. I don't have...

    Raccoon IN my coop

Last nite I went to lock the chickens in for the night and we had three coons in the coop. One was sitting on the roost next to my sleeping chickens! I think they've been getting in to drink the water since it's been so dry. I can tell because the water has been empty the last couple of days...

Help with hen plucking feathers - PHOTOS included

I don't know. This seems to be more than molting. Look at the broken feathers on her back. Also, her backside is red and tender is some spots. It would be hard to believe this is just molting.

Help with hen plucking feathers - PHOTOS included

Oh. Also wondering if it has something to do with roosting. The hens seem to like a spot next to the wall on the roost and tend to fight over that spot at dusk. We tried making additional roosting spots but all four like that one spot.

Thank you for your quick response. What is blue kote? I've seen it mentioned here before. Does it taste bad to the chickens and make them stop? Is that something I can get at Fleet Farm? We do have a hen who can be a meanie. Anyway to stop her from pickin on Golda?
