I am sure this has been covered somewhere in the past 864 pages....
I acquired some Porcelain hens over the weekend. The judge said I should mix them back to my Millies to enhance their color. The breeder said to NOT do that because it will not work. What is the correct way? I am new to the...
I have a 9 week old roo and pullet that are a color I have not ever seen before. Not quite grey, not quite cream, not quite white...but in between all of them. The color doesn't show in pictures. Any ideas? I have a lavender hen whom I am assuming is the mom. Roo's could be Millie or Golden Neck.
Ugh, I had a sick roo that I knew wasn't going to make it. I held his head repeatedly in my hands trying to muster courage to do so. I couldn't bring myself to do it. I was in tears, hubby was not home and it needed to be done. I went inside and found the .22 rifle. I found this to be fast...
Thanks for all the pictures. Today he seems to be doing ok. I don't think he likes his cast but he is eating and drinking. If he survives into adulthood, he will be kept in an enclosed pen so he won't be easy pickings for predators.
I have a little Belgian D'Uccle who was hatched a tad over 3 weeks ago. He had spraddle leg, and we fashioned some sort of harness to try to solve the issue. It was not successful and I figured "nature would take it's course". He made it! He is currently 1/2 the size of his hatch mates and...
I love my D'Uccles! They are the most curious little things and just always have to know what I am doing and "help". They have been some of the most friendly chickens I have ever owned....and I have owned a bunch of breeds. Their feathery feet make it comical to watch them gallop around the...
I take a pumpkin and cut a 6 inch in diameter hole off the side wall of it and let them hollow it out. The next day I retrieve it and fill it with goodies. Since it is winter I mix up canned cat food, oatmeal, cracked corn, sunflower seeds, scratch grains or any combination of the above...
How long do you hold on to your chicks before you sell them? I am in the process of trying to get some show quality birds for fair in August. I have hatched a little more than 2 dozen. I don't want to be over run with chickens come spring time.
I leave it up to my girls to decide. Most take a step out, huddle by the door but look happy just to be outside. The others hang out inside. I have been trying to keep an area of the floor of the coop "free" of debris, litter and poop to throw cracked corn or scratch grains down so that they...
Here is my coop set up. The smaller one on the right is for the show birds. The pen attached to it can be open and extended to the pen behind in summer so they have more room to play while the free rangers from the large coop are out playing. In winter, I can separate the pens so that each...
My coop itself is 4x6 feet. I took out the perches as they weren't using them anyways. I have nesting boxes low enough for them to hop into inside. As far as birds, the number fluctuates as I grow out some of the juveniles in here, but the number of adults remains at about 3-4 roo's and 4-6...
I have them in a coop with an attached 12 x 12 pen. I keep the coop lined with about 6 inches of pine shavings year round. The pen area I add in a lot of grass clippings, leaves and other soft compostable materials. We show in August and the judge complimented us on how great their feet...
I have had a few "stay out too late" and miss the shut down. I think they hunker down in trees or tall grass. They came back in the morning and were pacing around the coop looking for their friends. I hope she comes back for you!
Usually I let my broodies raise the babies. I didn't think this plan through when I had egg hatching on the brain. Will she be OK if I pull the babies from her?
I have not had a hen go broody in the winter where I have let her hatch eggs. I had an abundance of eggs and decided to let her sit on 10 while I stuffed my incubator as well.
My question is about the babies...should I let her keep her babies with her or pull them and put them under heat...
All my birds. I had one broody hen who was a frizzle...but she had been broody for about 3 weeks by that point (and actually hatched these cuties) and I assumed none of the eggs were hers. Let alone 3, since I collected all the eggs in a 24 hour period. That's what has me the most puzzled.
The only birds in the pen were D'Uccles. I do not have any Silkies. I have one other non D'Uccle roo, but he is a 13# RIR cross and there is no way he is able to get into the breeding pen. It's perplexing....
