    Rats

Only problem (from what I understand) is that the rats can CARRY the poison away-thereby dropping some. I'm not sure even tucking it inside something will work if your pets can get anywhere near the dropped food (it must be appealing to the tastebuds to animals otherwise the rats wouldn't want...

They seem to be getting bigger! Snakes!!

I would prefer a cat over a snake any day for rodent control. And It is just about impossible to snake proof anything. If you can see a crack of light, a snake can get in. And I will not let anyone even suggest to me that I should relocate them. It is my property, and my investment and the law...

    Late hatch

I would hold tight on candling at this stage. What may happen if you disturb the hen is she may decide that she is finished and get up with only the babies that already hatched and abandon the eggs left. I found that momma hens do SO much better at hatching than an incubator-I would trust her a...

    How Did You Discover BYC?

Found this site using a google for (if I remember correctly) "chicken club" or "chicken forum". I have had chickens for a while already but just wanted a group of similar minded people to talk to. (Boy did I get what I was looking for!)

    Fliers?

I was thinking the same thing myself! My feedstore carries LOTS of chickens, but it seems the locals lack chicken education and a source for info. They have a great big corkboard for anyone to advertise on-I would love to do that too.

They seem to be getting bigger! Snakes!!

Hi again, I think those are black racers. Personally, as a chicken owner that has spent a stupid amount of $ on my chickens, I don't trust ANY snake, and I don't think i am going to take the time to get my field guide to snakes out when face to face lol! dixierose, did you also consider the...

They seem to be getting bigger! Snakes!!

Personally...I LOVE DEAD SNAKE pics! It is the 3rd and 4th one I have found in like a month what can I do about them??? I think you may want to have what is considered "house" chickens until you can catch, trap, kill, or relocate them. That sucker is/was HUGE :o

Space Problem in Brooders for Chicks and Keets

wow, I had no idea they would do that! I got mine when they were several weeks old and put them in with the bantam babies and they get along so well. How horrible to rip off beaks! Yes, then I would STRONGLY suggest monitoring them or having supervised visits until they can be left together.

    Shipped Eggs and Hatch Rate

Yes, and I am one that will take my chances if I am in doubt about the viability. If I think it may be good I will leave it in the bator and cross my fingers that it is not bad and won't EXPLODE! (haven't had that happen yet). 2 eggs from my last batch I though were'nt any good at day 14...

    Shipped Eggs and Hatch Rate

I have had a 100% hatch rate on shipped eggs-but one was born with a defect. I also had 12 hatch of 24. It appeared to be a fertility issue as I candled early and they were clear. I try to order from the same state or the next closest state to me. I figure longer travel time=less viable shipped...

Space Problem in Brooders for Chicks and Keets

Hi, I am pretty sure I am clear on what you are asking. You want to know if you can put your keets and chicks together because the keets are running out of space (growing). I have my keets with my chicks now. I had to combine them too. The keets are very gentle creatures and do not peck and...

    cloudy around the yolk

Here's a site for consumer concerns which may apply if you are selling: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/eggs/res04-consumer.html And a neat quiz: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/QZ00027 Hope you do well selling!

    cloudy around the yolk

from a google search: EGG WHITE--A cloudy white in a raw egg is caused by carbon dioxide and indicates freshness. As the egg ages, the carbon dioxide escapes through the pores of the egg, and the white will become less cloudy. A pinkish or greenish-blue raw egg white possibly indicates spoilage...

Please Help!!! City Council meeting today!!

I think that if you don't have to consult your neighbors before you get an abused-rescued Coon Hound from the city pound that will howl all day and night, then you should not have to consult a neighbor before you get a few hens. Think about it. I agree fully! I have neighbors approx 150 feet...

    Freecycle: A good experience...so far!

I had to go through Yahoo Groups in order to find my local freecycle. Yes, I think the PPU means planned pick up or pending pick up. I have gotten fencing, a nice dog crate (for the chickens heehee), and a like new vacuum plus a few other things I can't remember...
