    Hen Has a Broken Toe

Right foot, left toe. She's 10 1/2 weeks old and it doesn't appear to bother her at all. I have no idea when this happened. Wife did research and said it should be splinted. I said it doesn't bother her, so let it be. What's the correct course of action?

    Crooked Beak

This bird is my wife's favorite. She's sweet, but at 10 weeks, the beak is really off. She eats my grape leaves, the crumble, and yogurt and sunflower seeds, but she's still the lightest of the clan. She also likes to plop down all the time. I bet she becomes a broody little gal. What do ya...

    Blueberries? Seriously?

I don't know an air breathing critter on the planet that doesn't like blueberries. Until I met these girls. Chopped cherries, apples, asparagus twigs, Chinese peas and Oregon Giant peas, but blueberries.....He!! no. Won't even give them a second look. To think of the pancakes I could have...

Are Dominiques Known as a Smart Breed?

OK, I'm sure ya'll are thinking this is a dumb question. And I guess I agree, but I've read lots of posts where their youngins take forever to come in and out of the coop and use their runway down to the run. 4 1/2 weeks old and 3 days in the coop, and they come down when the door opens, and...

    Feeding 41/2 Week Olds

Man I've read so much today. Going back years of posts, and there's sooooooooo much conflicting info. Honestly, my last rodeo I was a first timer. Now I ain't wingin' it. (Get it? Wingin' it? I kill myself). OK, back to the post. The first bag of medicated chick starter is almost gone...

    ^%$@#$$ FOX!

Last night was the first night the girls were out in the coop. From 0537 to 0640 I got 2 pics and one video of that fox. Obviously he knows what's inside, and he ain't going away. I hate getting up early, but looks like I'll have to. And if I hit a sprinkler, I'm gonna REALLY lose it.

    They’re Finally Out!!

Just shy of 5 weeks, and nicely feathered. 52 tonight, warming every night from here on. I gave them their heat lamp if they need it. It’s just nice to have the garage back. They get the run in 3 or 4 days. The jealous dog is really happy!

Why is a Broody Chicken a Bad Thing?

Lots of questions and advice on how to break this habit. But isn’t it a genetic thing? We had a Wy that was broody. She came out when she wanted. Sometimes laid eggs out on the property, but she was usually with the flock. If she disappeared, we shook the sunflower seed bottle and she’d run...

    Strange Little Bird

Of our 6 Dominique chicks, all hens, 5 have adjusted pretty well at slightly over 3 1/2 weeks. Then there’s #6. Skittish, stays away, doesn’t want to be touched and screams bloody murder if my wife manages to pick her up. The others get their heads brushed with a mascara brush, go for...

    Sunflower Seeds

My wife gave our last run of hens (Before the fox annihilated our flock) yogurt and sunflower seeds. We never had a shortage of eggs. Our Dominiques are now 3 weeks old. How old should they be B4 we start giving them seeds? They can wait on the yogurt! Thanx.

    The Girls Have Arrived

From Cackle Hatchery. 1700 miles away and less than 2 days delivery time. Ordered 5 Dominiques and got 6. Right now I'm having difficulty keeping the Goldilocks temperature zone and they got a little chilly last night. But they're not stressed and have settled in fine. I remember how fast...

    Kinda New But Not Really

Been absent from this forum for quite a few years. Some of you might remember me from my ‘Lots Of Poop Chicken Coop’ thread and my measuring disasters!!!!! After. A fox destroyed our Lavender Orpington flock, my wife just didn’t want to take the chance again So the coop has stayed empty. But...

    !@#*^%#$ Foxes

Haven't visited here in several years. Everything was fine. Getting our eggs, the girls were happy, and the ticks were nonexistent. I assume it's the drought and the predators have come down looking for food. Yesterday morning they were let out of the coop, as usual, went out on the...

    Rooster Not Adjusting Well

I had 3 Lavender Orpington Roos and that was 3 too many. I sold them all, the Alpha being the last to go. About 14/15 weeks old, and not a problem in my flock. A little agressive, but only enuff to keep order. He was just toooooo loud!! Well, the guy called this morning and said the Roo is...

    Automatic Pop Door Questions

I'm thinking this might be a Ford Vs Chevy discussion, but here goes anyway. I don't know what to do about the pop door. There's a nice (but pricey) one from England. There's one from Automatic chicken doors. And several folks have bought the motor and other stuff and built there own. So...

    Yogurt every day???

Our 8 birds are 7 1/2 weeks old. My wife gives them in the neighborhood of 3/4 cup plain yogurt every day. Isn't that too often and too much??? Thanx.

    Does Your Nesting Box Leak?

The reason I ask is, after studying picture after picture after picture of nesting boxes (Those that protrude on the out side of the coop) I hardly see anyone using weatherstripping. I'm at that stage in building my coop where I have to build the nesting boxes. I want a flip up top, and even...
