A Cautionary Tale of Two Broody Hens and the Unrecognizable Chicks

This is all definitely a learning experience for me. I will definitely not let two broody hens hang out together again and by writing this post hope a few people maybe read it and will take the same caution before something bad happens to them. I raised chickens as a kid now and then...which...

A Cautionary Tale of Two Broody Hens and the Unrecognizable Chicks

I feel like I should post this just so people don't make the same mistake I did....and also I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience of a hen not recognizing her own chicks. Read on... I had one broody hen in the coop for two weeks and during that time I let the other...

How long can incubating eggs stay cool?

I know this post is super old...but I have to add that the chicks most likely died from other hens having access to the eggs. This happened to me with the first egg that hatched under my first broody hen. I quickly closed off that part of the coop to the other chickens and 12 more eggs hatched...

My Muscovy Duck flew away this morning.... :(

Looked for twice two and three days ago. Didn't see her. :( Lots of mallards on the shore and whitish ducks in the distance (thought it might be her, but then I saw more than one). Sigh...hopefully she's happy wherever she is! :(

My Muscovy Duck flew away this morning.... :(

Thanks....I'm going to do that...maybe tomorrow I can make it down there after work. I wish it didn't get dark so early!! If I manage to get her back I'll let you know. :)

My Muscovy Duck flew away this morning.... :(

Thank you bridebeliever! This makes me feel better. I know she likes it here....but I don't blame her for wanting to take a nice long swim. Fingers crossed she'll want to come back! I suppose there's also the thought that maybe she's free to go where she wants. She's not really a nuisance I...

My Muscovy Duck flew away this morning.... :(

I have one Muscovy Duck. I've had her for a year and a half and she's very sweet and lets me pet her. She lives with a flock of chickens and they are often cooped up, but I let them out a lot as well and they all stay in the yard. Last summer, and then again last Friday, the neighbor's stupid...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi! Short story: I am looking to buy two coturnix quail hens from someone in the Saratoga area (I live in Schuylerville) and at the same time would like to find a new home for my male coturnix quail. I will pay a more than fair price for the hens (they don't have to be super young, just...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok thanks for the info. Do you think it's ok that I handled the eggs and turned them? I know it's supposed to be the "lockdown period." :-| They still haven't progressed or changed that I could see but I'm keeping my eye on them... -Crystal

    NY chicken lover!!!!

I was hoping for some help from experienced egg incubators.... I have 6 button quails that seem to be hatching right now. They are a few days early (directions I read online said it takes 17-21 days for them to hatch in an incubator even though it should take 14 days to hatch under a hen)...

Help! I think my button quail eggs are hatching and I'm not sure what to do...

This is my second attempt at hatching button quail eggs. The first time was several years ago and nothing happened at all. This time I've been very good at watching the temp and humidity etc. and I think they are hatching early! It's day 14 (when they hatch under their mom), and the...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

That's a great idea...I wonder why I didn't think of that. The only other thermometer I have is the thermostat downstairs. I'll put them next to that one and see what happens. Thanks so much!!

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all! I have a question I was hoping some of you experience egg hatchers could help me with. I am trying to set up my still air incubator (the styrofoam kind) for some button quail eggs I got in the mail. I've been working on regulating the temp and humidity before I put the eggs in. My...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Java Girl - I live in Schuylerville and am wondering what auction you're referring to. The only one I know of is Town and Country, but their livestock is sold on Saturday night. Is there another one?? Could they possibly have button quails?

Help!!! My Button Quail turned on her mate!!!!

Hmmm...well there goes that theory. I couldn't imagine why she's attacking her mate! Poor thing...perhaps it's best to separate them for now? If I were closer (I'm in NY), I would certainly provide them with a home...I'm desperately searching for button quails in my area...I have one lonely...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh thorny bushes...that's great...the buffer of trees and brush by the road near my house has lots of raspberries there. Hopefully that will deter my future hens from venturing near the road. Featherz...I so wish I had a coop ready to go right now! I would definitely be your backup! But...

    Button Quail

I'm not an expert on hatching...my button pair hatched their own eggs. But I do know from experience that mature males will pick on each other...usually one will dominate the other and in my own experience, will beat him down until he dies. :( Females seem to get along fine and male/female(s)...

    Button quail

I have had button quails for a few years now. They can make great pets if you work with them. They are naturally VERY skittish and to make good pets, you'll need to work them every single day until they are friendly (unless they are babies - two weeks old or less - it may take a while)...

Help!!! My Button Quail turned on her mate!!!!

Hi! Has your female been laying eggs? If not, your female is probably a male. Two males in the same close quarters will fight. One (the dominant one) will chase the other and peck them. Not constantly, but constantly enough...often until he dies. :( Most people think that if a button...
