Can't wait to try it. I've removed the bully but never the victim since I was afraid they'd go lower on the pecking order. Back with the flock every night is a great idea, too.
As far as I know, when a chicken molts they lose the whole feather.
Other chickens could be picking at her. I was shocked to catch my chickens in the act once.
The mites I've dealt with always start near the vent and work their way up.
I have mice and a disabled hen who also sleeps on the...
I dipped the birds in 4-10 day intervals, 3 times total. That should take care of new eggs hatching.
Cleaned the coop out many times.
I did NOT retire the coop. I kept one flock of 13 in the old coop and started a new flock of 34 in the second coop. The birds in the old coop are fine and the...
I'll have to keep Sevin Dust in mind! Permetrhin dust and spray were ineffective for us. We dipped our 28 chickens at three intervals just recently. But I can't see an immediate response since they won't grow new feathers till the fall. My other flock who had mites for three years and were...
Thank you for all that information! I will take it into consideration. The mite I'm referring to is called knemidokoptes laevis var. gallinae and affects the chicken like mange. My flock of 28 has it and they are less than a year old. They have destroyed feathers all the way up to their necks.
I'm starting this new thread in hopes of helping more hens and reaching out to stymied chicken owners. The original thread title is below and contains 8 pages of posts including photos.
Basically, if you have never seen a mite on your bird, yet it has broken off feathers or is being...
It's been about 4 years now for my poor chickens with the mites. But I just wanted to give an update for whomever is interested or needs more information.
1. hens were treated for mites that I never saw for 2 endless years. You name the product, I've tried it, No relief.
2. culled 15 hens...
Since the rooster can't reach his own neck to pick, either one of the other hens is doing it or he has mites/lice. I couldn't tell from your picture about the feather problems on his tail. I've had chickens with broken off feathers as well as feathers eaten away so that only the shaft is...
I did the sulfur dip on 17 chickens every week for 4 weeks and they are worse than ever; it's like I never did anything to treat them. But I like the idea of the vaseline to help smother the mites. Thanks for your post.
Thank you! We looked it up and you hit the nail on the head. Can you take a guess on the white one with the buff neck and the one in the forefront with striped eye? Thanks in advance!
