I strongly agree on the spinach. It's my flock's favorite treat and they have no diarrhea from it. They like dark green lettuce almost as much, and they also love inchworms. The inchworms hang down from the tree near their coop and the chicks pick them like apples .
Boy, that's a tough question. Once a bear gets habituated to being around humans and their delicious belongings, it's hard to get rid of. Trouble bears here are usually shot by the wildlife agencies if they intrude regularly into residual areas. Very young bears can sometimes be transported far...
OK, that's sort of what I figured. The rest of the gang looked fit and happy today when we let them into their yard. This is my first flock, so I'm a little paranoid that I might be missing something. Thanks for the reassurance!
The first day we got our chicks and settled them into the brooder we had a power outage. My husband was in town and I'm not able to get the generator started, so I was pretty panicky. Then I realized that we had a full water heater, so I filled up several tall, skinny metal cookie cans...
You'll want to pick a breed that is suited for your climate, too. I live in Minnesota where it can get to -30 in the winter, so I chose chickens that would have a rose comb. Apparently the larger combs tend to get frostbitten in our winters. We chose all the same breed to start out with so we...
We give them lettuce, spinach, carrots (chopped up), tomatoes, apples, and strawberries. They'll get raspberries when they start bearing. I just can't bring myself to give them dog food, because it's made of chicken. It might be fine for them, but I'd feel kinda creepy about it. One of their...
Sorry to hear about your losses. We lost 2 to pasted vent and 1 to plain old failure to thrive, and we just lost one yesterday to who knows what, so we have 16 now. Mine are a little older than yours now and out in their coop. Have you had your flock outside yet?
My husband and I have chairs...
Mine went out at 3 weeks and seem to be thriving (with one exception, which I posted about today). We put their lamp in the coop and turn it on when it gets chilly at night. It got down to 45 once after we put them out and they were fine with their heat lamp on. I'm glad we moved them out there...
Trust your instincts. If they look happy and healthy and are eating, drinking, and pooping well, everything is good. I'm not familiar with that breed either, so I'd love to see a picture too if you could post one.
My chicks are about 4 weeks old and have been in their coop for about a week now. Yesterday morning I noticed that one of them looked a little out of sorts (not moving much, just standing still with his feathers a bit puffed out), so I resolved to keep an eye on him. We had storms most of the...
We have our 3+ weekers in their coop, which also hasn't been painted yet. We'll wait until the cockerels go to...a nice farm up north, yeah, that's it ...before we paint the outside. My husband sheathed the inside of the coop with the plastic-coated panels they sell at home improvement stores...
Is this in a yard where the chickens are confined by a fence, or is it just an area where free-ranging chickens tend to congregate? If it's a fenced area, you could possibly divide it in two (or more) sections and alternate which side the chickens use. Reseed one side now with some grass or even...
I'm raising my first flock now, and I did not have them vaccinated. My vet (whose practice is about 90% agricultural) recommended only medicated feed to prevent coccidiosis but no vaccinations, and he knows better than anybody else what sort of issues are present in my area. I do keep a spotless...
