I just put down an entire bale of sawdust, then a thick layer of hay over that. My run was a swamp this morning. After the hubbs gets home from work, we are going to put a sloped tarp over the top to keep some of the rain out. The sawdust and hay seemed to really help. I dont know how much good...

How many are laying? That is a good looking collection of eggs. Congrats!
Im not 100% sure. I know my GSL, Barred Rock, one of my Buff Orpingtons, and at least two RIR. I have 20 all together. so possibly 5? I got 5 eggs today, but there might be a 6th that didnt lay today...I have...
So how old are chickens when they molt for the first time? Mine are about 4-5 months, and we are coming up on fall, Im worried if they start now, they are are going to freeze to death this winter...any answers?
That is great. My hen is about 22 weeks old, and is still the biggest, and in my opinion, the most beautiful. She hasnt started laying yet :( But Im sure she will start soon. She goes and sits in a box everyday, and then when I walk in, she hops down and looks from me to the box, like she wants...
We have been getting eggs for 7 days now, and my Golden Sex Link has been laying every day for 7 days. Two of my other girls started laying as well. From left to right :RIR, GSL, mystery egg. They are so pretty, and I couldnt believe the first time I ate one, how incredibly delicious they are!
I caught my Golden Sex Link, (Goldie) laying her egg yesterday. I figured out that she is the one that has been laying, 4 days in a row! I wish that my other 19 hens would start laying too! We want to have a big egg breakfast on saturday, but I dont think that 4 eggs are gonna feed 6 of us
!
Our first egg! No clue who laid it, but it sure is cute! I was so excited when I found it, I felt like I was watching one of my kids take their first steps
I have a 13-15 week old Buff Orpinton roo that I cannot keep. He has a very sweet personality, and loves treats! He will eat right out of your hand. I would like to trade for a hen that is around the same age as him. Dont care about the breed really. He has to go ASAP. (We are not allowed...
luckily it wasnt anything serious, and you trusted your mother hen instincts! Our girls have been outside for a week now, and everynight after they go in their coop, I have to check on them like 3 times before I go to bed. a couple of times I have gone outside and one will be laying on the...
My girls used to cheep all the time, my brooder was very full of chicks, and around mid day, and in the evening before everyone else settled they would just make tons of noise. Now they are outside full time, and dont make noise at all...unless they see me coming, then they go bezerk and all...
One of my 4 RIR's has become very attached to my two silkies. We have just recently moved out girls outside full time, and whenever I open the chicken door for them to go outside, the silkies stay inside, and huddle under the one RIR that stays in with them. I put the silkies outside today...
They are not so shy now...I was taking them outside everyday for some outside time..before they could be out there full time, and to get them outside, i would load them up in a box, and one of my reds would always jump in my hand, ready to go in the box, every time!
I have 1 Barred Rock, and she is about 5-6 weeks old. From the very beginning, she was always the first to to come to hand when I offered food, and always looked concerned if you picked up a chick and it started making noise. I thought for a while that maybe she was a he, but I have to the...
