Not always, a golden retriever tried to kill a hen and she ended up dying from injuries. An Akita mix gummed an escapee duck and dropped it at my feet unharmed. A timberwolf/malamute let chickens be around him and even climb on him. These were these dogs first experiences with chickens and ducks.
This thread is very helpful. Thank you. We have a Muscovy female and a mallard call drake. A couple months ago she tried to hatch some eggs, but they ended up turning blue :-(
We have 7 almost ten week old pekin ducks. They've been getting very vocal occasionally and grabbing the back of our mallard call drakes neck. (Like he would do to a female) He is so much smaller than they are so I encouraged them apart. He goes back to them. Are they going to hurt him?
We have a male mallard call and he has a very soft voice. His mate is a Muscovy and they are inseparable. They live in the coop and attached pen with our 7 nine week old Pekins and 16 hens. They free range during the day and do very well together. Drakes are much quieter than females like...
I sold the males today, kind of bittersweet. You could barely here any noise from them the whole car ride, so much different than the girls. Thanks for the tips.
I have 2 people that want to buy them thankfully :-) They are so cute, but we don't want to have too many drakes and then have them try to breed with the chickens. Plus, wow they eat a lot! I will try to take pictures, but I'm not sure how it will help because I can't tell them apart. Maybe...
I separated them and 7 were loud and 5 made squeaky sounds. They eat SO much so I'm hoping to be able to sell the males sooner than later. We have 16 chickens and 14 ducks and they went through 50 pounds of feed in 5 days and that's with them being pastured.
I wouldn't be surprised it they were hand raised. We had a jaguar in our trees that someone had declawed and then set free when they were sick of it. It couldn't climb or do any of it's normal things, so it survived by killing everyones cats and small mammals.
We've had friends loose...
