How autistic is your son? Would he understand not to go near the electric fence? If he would find it difficult to remember maybe you could set up a cheap and cheerful chicken wire fence or something similar to keep your son safe from the electric fencing.
Turtleman, if you're reading this...
In my opinion, all animals go through that horrible teenage stage where they challenge authority. When our cat tried to get aggressive or exerted his superiority, I made sure he knew I was top cat. If he started to scratch something he wasn't supposed to there was a loud 'no' or 'hssssss'. We...
We have bantam hens, quail and a cat. Our cat is a good hunter, will kill anything just about. He treats our girls, all of them, as part of the family and will protect them from other cats. On occasion he will eat a wild bird in front of the girls, which makes them shout. Not a good move as...
We fostered a young rescue owl (he was hit by a car and a rescue person picked him up and tended to him). We only had him to try and get him back to health and hopefully ready to go back into the wild. Our pullets, even though only a few months old were very wary of him, didn't go anywhere...
I'm afraid I'm far, far too soft about killing predators - won't kill them. I live in England and thankfully have very few predators nearby. Can't even bring myself to cull a cockerel. We had a rat for a while and I bought a humane trap but didn't set it up, thankfully he left.
I understand...
We have two Mantes chicks and their Mom died. Can we breed either of these with their Dad? (Yuck, sorry - don't know of any other Mantes hens around.) If we can find cousins would that be okay? How distantly related would be okay?
Sounds scary. Electric fencing? Large dog? Pedator pooh? We have fairly strict gun laws here (UK) so shooting is out of the question for us. We've had the occasional fox come over but thankfully have never lost a hen to a fox. Our neighbour has a large dog who comes up to our fence and...
We have one beautiful golden serama hen. We got two from a breeder friend because their foster Mom killed the other chicks. Sunshine and her brother Lucky were both hand reared and are friendly, cheeky (sassy) birds. Lucky grew into a silky serama, went back to the breeder and now has a...
I live in England and have a Rhodebar chick (hopefully a girl - 3 weeks old). I read the same website about Rhodebars being a cross and when I mentioned it to the breeder friend who gave it to me nearly got my head bitten off. Rhodebars are a rare breed chicken, not a hybred! I've been a bit...
Thank you for your photos, they are lovely chicks. Humm, well Amber is rust/orange without chipmonk stripes and no white spot. She has a small dark brown blaze on her head, like the female chicks, but it is a lot smaller. Amber has deep red/brown stripes across her little wings (nearly 3...
We have one rhodebar chick, hopefully a girl. Amber is orange/rust with a dark brown patch on her head. Someone said look for white patches, she doesn't have any white patches. Is she a girl?
Hi! Just joined BYC. I live in Suffolk, England. We have 8 bantams: Welsummer, 2 Naked Necks, Poland/Naked Neck, Serama, Modern Game, Old English Game and baby Rhodebar. We also have 4 quail, a tortoise and a long-suffering cat.
Started with 2 quail four years ago, bought 2 hens a year...
