My 9/10 week old White Leghorn pullets & cockerels

practically silent. I'm pretty sure we have a roo or two because someone on BYC said so after seeing a photo. Anyway, they make very soft "peep peep peep" sounds. I've only heard a hint of a "bok!" when one pullet became separated for a short time. I know WLHs are flighty in nature so do they...

I found a young adult robin unable to fly.

I don't know exactly what's wrong, he/she can't fly. I put it in the brooder with water and chick crumbles. I live in Utah so everything except McDonald's and Walmart is closed. Any advice? Thanks!

Ugh. The guys at the IFA are puzzled as to why I'm still buying chick starter.

Our chickens are 8 weeks old. I have decided (thanks to BYC) to feed them starter until I see an egg. The feed at the IFA is kept in a separate barn from the hardware store so I'm always accompanied by an employee. Since I've been in there so much I'm acquainted with most of them. I don't care...

It's been confirmed we have White Leghorns. Feed question.

When I spoke with the guy at the feed store he said that's all they've ever stocked. This explains why they're so skittish! I had thought they were White Rocks. I was looking forward to brown eggs simply for the novelty of a different color of egg. Oh well, fresh eggs are fresh eggs! I also was...

I've made some headway re: very skittish 8 week old pullets/cockerels in their run.

They moved out to their coop & run last Saturday. They enjoy their run but dash into their coop when I approach. I want them to be more comfortable so I've been shaking BOSS in a container as I slowly approach, call out "chick chick chick!" as I approach, toss some in, then back away. This...

Talking to the neighbors to the rear of us went much

better than I expected. I went over, introduced myself, and explained we have what we think are five hens but if one's a rooster we'll get rid of it. "Oh, I just love roosters!" exclaimed the wife. Well, we can't have them here. I then told them to please let us know if they had any issues...

"Swan", put on by a dance company in Paris.

Check out the video: http://www.theworld.org/2012/06/french-dance-company-swan/ Thought you guys might like to see it. It's a little....out there but I like the concept in general.

Did anyone else hear about "Swan" on NPR?

I'm torn between , , and . There's a video: http://www.theworld.org/2012/06/french-dance-company-swan/ The story of Swan Lake, the classic tale of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse, has been interpreted in countless ways since Pyotr Tchaikovsky first composed...

    The coop is done.

Opinions & suggestions welcome! These are our first chickens. Doorway: Looking out of the coop. The waterer you see on the right is now on some bricks closer to the ground. "Practice nests", food, water, and heat lamp: My dh and the awesome window he installed. They're two...

    Rookie mistake...footware for inside coop?

Last night was our chickens' first night in the coop. I walked in this morning wearing my flip flops not even thinking about it. My mind was on how they had fared their first night out. I now need to wash the poop from my shoes. What do you wear into the coop? I'm thinking about getting a pair...

Is the pecking order sometimes subtle?

We bought our 5 chicks at the hardware store on May 9th. They're probably 6/7 weeks old by now. This weekend they're moving out to the coop. I keep reading threads about pecking order. Is it an obvious thing to see? I'll sit & watch them in their brooder and they all seem to get along just...

Two things: coop ventilation & brooder dust related.

    1. I cannot believe the dust these chicks have generated. They're in our laundry room. I wiped out the laundry basket and gross. It isn't contained to the laundry room, either. 2. We had pretty bad, windy weather here on Saturday. We were working inside the coop. I was able to tell what the...

    Breed help please.

I have no idea what we have. They're about 5/6 weeks old with lots of feathers so I thought they might be old enough to identify. We're crossing our fingers for all hens but I know it's way too early to tell. Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

    Pet jealousy over new chicks?

We've had our first chicks for one and a half weeks now. After we clean out the brooder, give the chicks some love then put them back in our normally aloof cat won't leave us alone! It's sweet and also very interesting. Last night he wouldn't leave my lap which is highly unusual. Has anyone else...

    Hello from Utah!

I'm very happy to be here. My husband and I purchased our first 5 hen chicks on May 9th. They've been doing really well. The coop is coming along well too. I'm glad to have found you guys since we're so incredibly new to us. Thanks for having me!
