I have one hen in a mixed flock of seven chickens, and my aunt has her sister. Before I got my rooster, my Barnevelder hen was the boss lady. Yes, they seem to be "softer" and non-agressive, however mine for whatever reason took the top spot on the pecking order and would lead the others around...
I hope you were able to keep your roo! I have a silver laced bantam wyandotte pair myself, and I love them to death! I just hatched out 6 of their babies, they are 8 weeks old now. So I don't have much experience with chicks, but I would say once your chicks are old enough to tolerate the cold...
Sorry if this has already been asked.. but is it okay to use the deep litter method in the area where they roost at night? It has a wooden floor. In the picture, it's the upper part of the coop. The bottom part (where they spend most of the day when they aren't free ranging) has a dirt floor...
Well my mom took the reins on naming these guys, we are calling them George and Mary! (From the movie "It's a Wonderful Life"). It's my mom and dad's favorite movie, and we watch it every Christmas so it means something. Plus George is a cute name for a rooster, don't you think? Thanks for all...
Oh yeah, how could I forget about Ginger and Rocky?? I love Wyandottes too! Here are some pictures..
The cockerel's tail feathers aren't fully grown in yet, but he already is beautiful! The pullet's back feathers were pecked out when she was a chick (according to the guy I bought them from)...
Over the weekend I went to the Ohio National Poultry Show in Columbus, and came home with two little silver laced wyandotte bantams!! One is a cockerel and the other a pullet. I need names for them.. any suggestions? Preferably names that work together, but I'll take any name suggestions! (I...
Nice job! I live in Ohio where the winters get cold and snowy as well.. this is my first winter owning chickens, I am a huge worry wart about if they will be warm enough!
My ameraucana, splash wyandotte, and barnevelder found the garden bed!
All huddled together, they really enjoy each other's company!
Half the time Lucy's head (the blue ameraucana) would be underneath Daphne! (the splash wyandotte). Seriously how is that even comfortable!??
I have a small flock of four (getting more soon) and I have one barnevelder I got from my aunt, who has her sister (I'm not sure where she got them from, I'll have to ask). Here are some pictures of her..
Pretty Penny :)
First day out of the coop and allowed to free range...
I live in ohio and out of my 4 hens we only get 1 a day, sometimes two. Two of my chickens are just "on break" I think, because they haven't laid in over a month. I'm thinking the heat is a factor, it's been in the 90's almost every day this summer
My two Wyandottes haven't been laying for over a month (one is almost done with molting and the other is just on break), but I found a tan egg in the nest box today after my Barnevelder came out of the coop. The only other chicken we have besides these 3 is an Amerucana, but obviously it's not...
