    Broody red meat chicken

I kept a couple red meat birds from last years batch, because they were doing fine, and I was not in a procession mood. They are likely coming up on a year old. One has gone BROODY, and is mean and protective of the 6 eggs she is on. I thought that hybreeds had this breed out of them. She...

Friendly farmer sick after processing birds

About a week back, I processed 5 Cornish X as I have done for 4 years. I did get in contact with a bit of poop, and did minor hand cuts. All birds seemed healthy. The next day chills, that passed, and 'lower intestional distress' that is still with me 5 days later. I am not worried about me...

Cornish X raised on welded wire, or farmer vs farmers wife

This years Cornish X are on welded wire on top of a 2x4 base hoop house. The idea is they can poop through the wire, or it can be hosed through. They soon will be living on wire 4 inches off the ground. Perhaps the air under the wire will help with baldness. So they live on wire in there...

    Pretty green flys (blow flys)

When I process chickens soon as the innards hit the area flys show up in large quanitys. Pretty green small ones. Where do they come from, and how do they know how to show up at chicken cleaning day. I have few flys here, and no little green ones unless chicken guts are around.

Broody egg fight---Girls gone wild--broody chicken version

I have a little Silkey that is/was broody on 4 eggs, and doing O.K. My little Cochin took over with her chick, forcing the silkey to try to hatch golf balls. Should I intervene, or just let the girls fight it out. The cochin was/is a good mom, and the Silkey was super protective till she got...

    Stripe Toes

My Cochin just hatched what seems to be a healthy chick with stripes across its toes (the short way). Both possible dads are Frizzle Cochin's bantim's. I would send pictures---but toe's? Is this some freak of nature? Secret prize breed?

    Bantum Cochin---Lazy or normal

I just got a couple Cochin's. The hen seems to avoid running around, and spends most of her day roosting. Durning free range time she stays close to the yard, and ventures maybe 15 feet. I have others that stay close. She looks good, crop is normal, eats and poops well (I think). She can...

Killer chicken (Polish) hen on the loose

Got a call from a neighbor--'your chicken is by my house' and figured it could be solved in a few minutes. I got a 2nd call from the same guy, seemed alarmed---your chicken is on my porch steps. I went over and found my Polish hen had gotten seperated--lost from the flock, and followed me...

    Sex Change operation

I have a bit of a question from the world of the weird. First my OEG Rooster passed on 3+weeks ago. He was in the house in the chicken hospital for a week, and was not crowing or 'roostering' for a week or so previous. So, I estimate it likely to have been 4-6 weeks since the girls say any...

    Newcastles in Belize

I just read that Newcastles has spread since Nov, 2008 from a pocket to most all of Belize. Belize is about 70 miles wide, and about 170 miles north to south, in Central America. I have traveled a bit there years ago, but have only limited knowledge of the country, beyond there being 'allot...

    Transporting over distance

I may be a campground caretaker this summer 2 days north from N.C. in MN. No problem with chickens once I get there. I am considering putting a 'box' on a utility trailor to thansport the 9-12 beasts there as leaving them here for 3 months is just not wise. Has anyone else been dumb enough to...

Oak leaves in the Chicken yard

To keep my chicken yard cleaner (they promptly turned it to dirt) shall I put the massive quanity if leaves my yard , and change out every so often. So far they seem to like it--but are afraid of the leave at first--the run is in high ground. Anyone see a problem with this instead of...

    Shaking pair/roo and hen

At the advise of the 'You should get more chicken' crowd here and for protection of the hens due to losses I got a 'silver duckwing old english banty rooster' and his wife. Really pretty Roo, and both appear clear eyed and healthy. They are additions to the 8 other polish/silkey/and easter...

    Would a rooster help

I lost my first 4 sex linked to faulty tractor design and likely a raccoon. Raising my numbers to 9, a new coop and run, all was well. With a floored coop, lights, and being next to the house, all seemed well. So as long as we were out adding features to the coop I let the girls free-range ...

    Making the flock become one

My replacement flock consists of 3 Silkeys, about 4-5 months and 2 month polish, easter Egger, and Wyandotte. We gradually put them together with minimal problems. The biggest Silkey can be a bully at times, but all is well overall...

    Polish difficult for beginners?

I just read 'someplace' that Polish were difficult in some way to raise. Of course it was a blurb and did not say why the breed was difficult. I have 4 Polish and at 4 weeks seem extremely healthy and active. Is there some problems or special needs that polish have? These birds have a strong...

City of Ashville N.C. chicken ordance

    Chicken update

A bit back I wrote about my 4 'local feed store' girls were killed by what may have been a raccoon per method of kill. I replaced them with 3 Silkeys I found locally of the same age. I wrote that the Silkeys were beauty Queens, pretty but not much energy or personality. The Silkeys are coming...
