Honestly, I think manually removing poison ivy is the way to go. I wear long sleeves, long pants, and heavy duty dish gloves (nitrile) that I bought on amazon. Don't touch your bare skin with your gloves--put your hair up so you won't be tempted to brush it out of your face if applicable...
Poor babies. My chicks are older and still inside, at least partially because of the weather outside. While I agree that crowding is a likely culprit I don't think this is a problem that can only be solved by putting the chicks outside. Do you have electrolytes for them? I recently read a...
One of my dogs got their mouth on a chick. It happened super fast but luckily both my husband and I were out there and she immediately dropped the chick. At first the chick was clearly super stressed but it started eating and drinking again that night. I checked and there were tiny teeth...
Yes, the crop is on the right side of the chick under the neck and it's not unusual to be able to feel it there. Why aren't you free feeding the chicks? They should really have access to food at all times--they are growing fast.
I was just thinking about pesticide this morning. We don't spray anything in or around our house but do I need to worry about pesticide residuals from neighbors? This morning the chicks found a roach (we are in the SE and they are EVERYWHERE) and we don't use any chemicals but certainly other...
I gave them a live field cricket figuring they'd be terrified of it but they ripped it apart. That has to be similar in mass to a june bug (although a bit longer and narrower.) I just tried the june bugs and it took them a while to recognize it as a bug--maybe because it wasn't moving. They...
My bantam chicks are a month old. They have had random bugs that I (or they) have caught around the garden. My husband just reminded me that we have frozen june bugs in the freezer. They were collected from our plants and placed in a bag in the freezer to kill them. Would these be safe as...
I'd say that chick is a week old tops. Does it have white wing feathers coming in? It might be mottled rather than black if so. It's hard to see in the photos if the wing feathers are white or if that's just the fuzz. I agree with cochin though.
The rule of thumb on this forum is 4 sq feet of coop per bird plus 10 sq feet of run. So for 10 chicks you'd need 40 sq feet of coop and 100 sq feet of run. Maybe with bantams you could get away with a bit less but I imagine you are looking at a bare minimum of 20 sq feet of coop (4x5?) and...
I think they are likely Sultans. Your chicks have a noticeably poofy crest and beard. Once their body feathers start coming in it should be easier to tell whether they are sultans or silkie crosses but I'm going with the former until proven wrong. Where did you get them?
What color are their legs? I'm taking back the polish guess (which was based on the big crest they have) because I just looked and polish have unfeathered legs and 4 toes. Your guys have feathered legs, yes? I'm also new to IDing chicks so you'd probably get better advice over in "what breed...
Are you sure those are silkies? Silkies should have black skin and 5 toes (yours looks pretty buff in leg color.) Maybe post over in "what breed" but I'd guess polish with my very limited knowledge.
I know that cedar is dangerous due to the oils. I would wonder about redwood because it's also a rot resistant wood but since redwood isn't a common choice at a feed/ pet store I really don't know.
My chicks are 3 weeks old and slept without a heat/ light last night for the first time. It's usually ~84 in the room they are in at night. If you are expecting it to drop down to 75 overnight I'd turn back on the heat lamp for nighttime.
I agree with this. It was very honest of him to step up and admit that his dog had done it without any accusation or questioning. I'd think if he's willing he could pay for either new chicks or if you'd rather slightly older pullets. I wouldn't ask for any more than what you had originally...
Here's what my 3 week old (today) frizzle looks like. You can see that the contour feathers that are coming in also curl up as well as the wing feathers quite dramatically.
I'd guess the color on yours is self blue or lavender but I'm still just getting started learning so maybe someone...
