I have my coop in the back of my business. It is currently barren hard clay area w/ a bunch of weeds. I wanted to put down sod next spring but was concerned the chickens (who have free range of the yard) poop will burn the sod. Does anyone have experience w/ this? Thanks
Could someone explain "broody" as well? We have 7 hens and now one crazy looking rooster. They were all raised together and do not fight thus far. I would guess they are all 5 months old, just got our 1st egg yesterday!
What do you mean by "get the eggs quickly". If we collect the eggs, put them in the frig, will they still continue to develop leaving me with an un-usable egg?
The packing peanut McMurray sent me has turned out to be a Roo. What can I expect? Will I soon be over run w/ baby chicks? Will he turn mean and cause the hens to become mean or disturb there laying habits? Can anyone educate a newbie on roos?
I found one of my Red Star's in the hatching section of my Eglu and I knew she was putting her first egg out. Later I investigated and found nothing put a yolk covered in ants? What gives? There was no shell just egg yolk. Did she or one of the other chickens eat the shell and leave the...
We have the chickens in the storage of my business and change the cage every 3 days so the smell is not that bad. Would never do it at my house. They will go out Monday.
I got some Black Star chicks from McMurray. They are about 6 weeks old now and some are solid black while others are getting brown/gold markings on them. Did they send me something else or could these be males?
I got the "Eglu" from www.omlet.com It was crazy expensive, about $1200 w/ shipping, but it is behind my business which is brand new construction so I wanted something that looked good. Plus it is easy to maintain. They are really sweet!
They have feathers, but are shedding a lot ( I am hoping this is normal). The heat lamp is on a timer to run late at night, but I don't think it is even needed anymore as they are inside my business in a climate controlled room w/ no drafts.
My chicks are about 5 weeks old now. When can they go outside? I am on the coast of SC where day time temps are about 70-80 and night time temps are 50-60. Thanks..
My guess would be "homosapien"! Judging from the long blond hair I would go further to classify as being a female also known as a girl. Ohh.. wait you meant the bird! Sorry I am totally new to chickens.
I was given a free chick from McMurray even though I requested not to receive it (they could not assure a hen). This free chick is pretty aggressive and has been jumping on and chasing the other chicks. Does this mean it is a rooster? Is there anyway to tell? Also, my "Rhode Island Reds" are...
I have 12 healthy 2 week old baby chicks and was curious if I can give them crickets to start snacking on? Can they eat them ,will they eat them, or am I just a sick SOB? Will they not eat critters when they are eventually put in the back yard coop?
I got my chicks from McMurray. Down to 11 babies, but they all super vibrant. Keeping my fingers crossed. Some have poo on the back of their feathers. Is this a sign of "pasting"?
We came into work this morning (were we keep the chicks) and 3 more had died through the night. Looks like they had gotten trampled pretty good as well. So we started yesterday w/ 20 and now we are down to 12. We really only want 6-8 chickens for ourselves, but I was hoping to keep all...
