After 30 years I still don't know anything about chickens!!!

Long story short: I have gotten 6 eggs in the last 5 days from 10 various hens. We never got one egg around Christmas and New Years before. I thought the first was a fluke, but everyday for 5 days I'm finding 'em. Just saying is all. Everyday something new with birds in the yard. Happy New Year...

What is the best breed of bird?

I was reading some forums tonight, and they created in me the urge to answer this question. And the answer is: The best bird(s), be it chicken, turkey, duck or other, is the bird that you WANT and will nurture and enjoy. Whether you have the poultry fancy for showing, eggs, feather collecting...

    Royal Palm Turkeys Hatching Today

Well, about 4 weeks ago one of my hens went broody, followed by the other hen later in the week. During the set, they were off the eggs dozens of times, almost collected the eggs twice. This morning, while I was doing chores, I noticed two chicks in the nest, and some empty shells. The two hens...

    Our First Turkey Egg Ever

Last Spring, we finally got some Royal Palm turkeys for the flock. We had had one RPT in the past, but we thought a trio would be better in the long run. So, we got some poults, gave away extras, etc and we have 2 pairs left. Yesterday, one of the hens went into the dog house in their pen and...

    SURPRISE !!

Well, imagine my surprise when I went out in the middle of a storm yesterday morning and found a little chick under one of our broody hens. We have 2 Black-tailed Japs, and they went broody last month. They gave up about a week ago, when our 2 Bantry hens took over the nest boxes and kept...

    Welsummer Roosters need new home

I am in the process of improving my flock genetics and I have 3 really nice boys to place. They all crow and are reproductively active, and are very polite. I have 5 high priced cockerels coming in behind them, so Manny, Mo and Jack need to move on. These guys were hatched in late April 2012...

Howdy y'all, The gson and I went down to Caroline County Saturday and caught the Va Poultry Breeders Show at the Caroline County FG. It was only about 2 hours/100 mi and we had a good time. Va Fall Show in Richmond

Well, I guess there aren't a lot of exhibitors on this thread, but I'll try one more time. Is anybody going to the Virginia Poultry Breeders Association Fall Show in Ruthers Glenn near Richmond Saturday November 19? We hope to get there and maybe check out the Sales Area as well.

Lessons learned from a Post Tropical Cyclone (Sandy)

My 'bator was running as Hurricane Sandy came ashore and passed to our Northeast. The electricity stayed on, but the wafer in my thermostat gave me fits. It seems that as the barometric pressure dropped, the wafer expanded and completed the circuit. Luckily, I was suspicious of something...

    MEGASTORM prep

Anyone worried about MEGASTORM next week? I have a back-up generator for the brooder and 'bator just in case. Not that I put a lot of faith in weather predictions. I have shoveled 8 inches of 20% way too many times.

    County Fairs

I noticed at the county fairs I attended this year that the number of poultry shown was down from the last couple years. I was wondering why. Could it be the new requirements for paperwork on the birds? Just wondering.

    sticky question

OK, I hatched one out of eleven eggs. The one that hatched took 48 hours to get out of the egg. During that time, some of the membrane dried on the chick. I raised humidity to 72% when it was taking so long, but he ended up with membrane all over him, including covering right eye. He looks like...

I am not sold on this eggs thru the mail thing

Granted, this was my first experience. And the eggs came a long way. When 17 eggs got here, 1 was broken and 5 had leaked egg white out thru the shell, so I had 11 to place in the incubator. At 8 days, I candled and only 2 showed development. Of those two, only one pipped. Looks like the bad one...
