    Rhodebars

One roo hatched last March (2016). The other is a year older (2015). I have checked eggs for fertility and do not seem to be finding many that are fertile.

    Rhodebars

We bought Rhodebar hatching eggs in 2015. They are very good layers--much better than Welsummers (which I really liked, just didn't lay well in the winter). Hatched chicks in 2016 and they are now laying very well. Recently put 24 Rhodebar eggs in each of two Brinsea incubators and none...

    Marking chicks

I have Rhodebar chicks in the incubator due to hatch in a couple of days (they're already pipping). I know I should be able to distinguish male from female chicks when they hatch. My question is this--will I still be able to tell them apart in a few days or weeks? If I should mark them, how...

    Raccoon ate my chicks

Something got into our EE coup Fri. night. We think it was a racoon. We have 2 x 4 welded wire over chicken wire. Whatever got in killed one hen, ate 9 EE chicks, and damaged mama hen's right eye. It dug under a landscape timber and then under the fence which was buried a few inches. The...

Brinsea Eco 20 As A Hatcher Only

Get a good hygrometer and set up the incubator before you put the eggs in the bator. In the Brinsea Eco 20, I would keep the two troughs in the bottom filled with water. During the last three days, to get the humidity up a little higher, I would place folded paper towels on the bottom of the...

Brinsea Eco 20 As A Hatcher Only

I have two Eco 20's. Very easy to operate, easy to keep humidity, easy to clean. Don't think I'll ever go back to a styrofoam incubator. The bottom can been washed and cleaned with some bleach in water. I usually take 4 screws out of inside of the top, wipe all surfaces down and finally use...

    Sben451s Page

Last year I decided I wanted to have a few hens for fresh eggs. A neighbor offered some Silkie chicks hatched from a school project. Seven cute white Silkies--that was the beginning. Next came nine Buff Orpington chicks. Out of those two groups, I ended up with only four hens, so of course...

    How many

I sell all my hens will produce. Right now my older hens are molting and this year's hens are producing pullet eggs. I'm getting 16 to 18 eggs a day. I don't make enough to pay for all their feed, but it helps. I only get $2 a dozen (that's the going price in my area--wish it was a little...

    Anything wrong with this?

I have a BLRW hen with a very similar problem. I'd be interested to know if your remedy proves helpful. I tried massaging her crop twice a day for several days. Next day it would look smaller, then later in the day, her crop would look huge again. I searched and found "pendulous crop" which...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Check Okiehen here on BYC. I bought eggs from her a couple of years ago. Had a 100% hatch on shipped eggs (I live in Alabama) and they are beautiful Welsummers.

    ALABAMA!!

Welcome to BYC. I live near Anniston, AL. I have Welsummers, Silkies, Wyandottes, Brahmas, Orpingtons, and Easter Eggers. They all do well here. Folks near here have RIR's, Leghorns, Dominiques. I believe our hot summers are harder on the chickens than our winter temperatures. I provide...

chicken feed do i need anything else

My chickens enjoy green veggies like cabbage. In fact I usually grow some kale in the fall and winter just so they'll have some "green" food in cold weather. You can hang the cabbage to give them something to peck (drill or poke a hole through the stem and pull a length of twine through the hole).

WOW!!! Very beautiful and unique. Nice.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

After having Welsummers for three years, I can tell you that mine are fairly friendly and curious. Pretty laid back in disposition. Easy to work around and round up at dark. That's been my experience. Their eggs are the best!! I even had a hen go broody this spring and hatch 9 eggs. She...
