So you don't section off the mom and eggs? Fancy Nancy has set up shop in the nesting boxes a foot off the ground. I was thinking that I'd put her in a chicken wire cage of sorts with a nest inside the coop (at floor level) when all was ready to go. I wasn't sure what to do when the chicks...
Thank you bobbieschicks. How often does Topsy go broody? This is Fancy Nancy's first time, she's not quite yet a year old--I was surprised that she went broody during the winter.
All okay on that delisha. She's broody all right. I will make sure she's full on broody again though before I get the eggs. A false start would be crushing.
The practical info I likely need to listen to. I will try very hard to wait until I'm ready. It's so hard to wait. And thank you for the wish of luck. I've not facilitated any hatching before and I'll be nervous.
Can someone weigh in about timing? I've got a broody Silkie (Fancy Nancy), and a friend who has fertile Silkie eggs and Salmon Faverolle eggs that she is happy to share. (I'm so lucky!). I live in Western Massachusetts and it was so cold this week that I'm rethinking my plan of putting eggs...
My lone silkie just nestles into the corner of the coop, so make sure you have a corner that doesn't have a roost overhead, or build a slanted roof under the roost for her/him. My plan is to get her another silkie pal so she can be warmer during the winter. As it is, whenever we get sleet or...
Thanks bunnylady, good to know. I may have to build a ladder for Fancy Nancy. She used to snuggle with my frizzle, but the frizzle passed away this fall and I worry that she's getting chilly.
Careful with the silkies swimmers. A neighbor's silkie drowned in a water trough, one of those circular low ones. She thinks that it's head feathers got too heavy and it couldn't get out.
So sorry Coop de Grille.
Emmalion, how did you train your dogs to leave the chickens alone? Do you have a rooster? And did you lose any chickens in the process?
I think you have a hen. My silkie girl looked very similar at this age. I also thought mine had streamers, but I think the variation in color for the buffs can fake us out. Has anyone else had that experience with buffs? Now my girl is laying cute little eggs.
I just read in a chicken raising book that I can add glycerin to your chickens' drinking water to keep it from freezing. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? Would it be a bonus and soften any potential crop issues? Or just a bad idea?
I used different colored zip ties on their ankles. Easier to put on and remove than the bands. I check them regularly to make sure they are loose enough.
Some of them have developed distinct enough wattles etc to tell apart up close. But I wish it was easier to tell from a distance. I often let...
One of my chickens is low in the pecking order and she did the same thing. The other hens almost seemed confused, as though they couldn't see her anymore. They lost interest and wandered away.
My chickens were getting along splendidly. And then, at around 20 weeks they made tons of noise in the early morning and I went out to find that someone had picked a fight. Poor Frida had a ripped wattle (healing well now) and I do believe that George (hen) had let her have it. She has emerged...
That would be so exciting. She just passed the toe test--her first and third toes are the same length when I pinch them together, which is supposed to indicate pullet. Her comb hasn't grown any and her behavior is still henish. I'll post results when I know for sure, and maybe some more photos...
