Here in Central Florida a few freezing nights is not the problem, the 98 degree weather with humidity plus is our problem for sure. My coop is a simple design but definitely built for heat, shade with lots of ventilation. When the wind is blowing cold we simply add a tarp to the roosting areas...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

we have decided to raise roos to 20 wks then butcher. It seemed crazy to feed them just to sell them for peanuts. We eat a lot of chicken and what better chicken than what we raise ourselves. Im fortunate my DH is a farm boy and slaughtering livestock was a way of life for him growing up.

My dog just killed my chicken :(

Well after a year of training to no avail we made the decision to put the old fellow down. It was not an easy decision but you do what you must do. So far the other 3 show no interest in getting in the chicken coop. I hope it stays that way.

Can you rid the soil of worms?

i cleaned their coop very well this week, and put down barn lime. I wormed them with the safeguard equine paste which was very easy, i just put a pea size drop in their beak and they ate it right up. It smells fruity so they seemed to like it. they have not had any problems so far with this...

    Which breed do you prefer?

I have Black Copper Marans, RIR Commercial, RIR Heritage, Americanas and Salmon Faverolles. The Salmon Faverolles are very sweet but their docile personality puts them at the bottom of the pecking order, even the rooster is a push over, they are good layers but the eggs are medium size. the...

Coughing and Wheezing but fine in every other way

thanks for the replys. I was wondering Is it not better to have a chicken that has natural antibodies against these viruses? I mean if you take them to shows and have anyone visit you that has chickens you are risking that your flock will become ill sometime in the future? Im a novice at this...
