This chicken had been found "Guilty" of........

........Feather Picking. We're not brand new to chickens but have never had such a feather picker. "Omelet" is a 15 weeks old EE. She is one of 6 chicks that we got from a feed store in February. We thought the chicks were going though a juvenile molt but we're not so sure anymore. They all...

Your opinion about our integration issues!

We're not brand new to chickens but have never integrated chicks in with older chickens. Our story. Do to free range predators and illness problems our flock of 6 was down to 1 (3 year old) white leghorn. So in March we were off to the feed store for new chicks. When the chicks were around 7...

What do you use to kill "ants" that is safe for your chickens?

We live in Florida so we have LOTS of ants. I have been using a mixture of dish soap, white vinegar and water in the run and coop. This does kill them on contact but when you come back 10 minutes later there are more ants. I have tried DE with not to much success. What do you use? Thanks...

What bedding do you use in your coop??

I know this has been discussed before but hoped to start a new conversation. We have had chickens for a few years now but have not found a "good" bedding for the coop. We started out with pine shavings but it was so messy and hard to clean out. We have been using sand (washed construction...

Do exhaust fans in a chicken coop really help?

When our chickens went in to roost last night it was 86 degrees in their coop. They have 4 windows, a lot of ventilation, and a double fan on at night for them yet its still hot. When the outside temperature is hot and humid would an exhaust fan really help in this case? Would love to hear from...

We're not happy to see this animal on our property. We've had enough problems with bobcats.

    Our automatic chicken waterer!!

We put a automatic waterer in our chickens run. They love it! Fresh water all the time. Bought the waterer at Tractor Supply. Small red knob on left is shut off for cleaning. White pvc is water. The gray is electric for coop. Hook up at house. Chicken - "What is that?"

Poor Tweety!! Molting and just lost her BFF. Pics.

This is Tweety (Daughter named). She has been molting for about 4 weeks. She hasn't laid an egg in that time. She is one of two white leghorn we had. Tweety and Athena were inseparable. Sadly Athena (the other leghorn) got sick and dead this week. So poor Tweety has lost not only her tail...

Advice for Athena Please! Pictures included. Egg issue? Sad Update!!

Athena is our 1 1/2 old white leghorn. She usually lays an egg every other day. On her off days she is fine. Very chatty and bossy. She eats, drinks and takes her dirt baths. On the days she lays her egg she is very lethargic, weak, quiet and spends most of the day lying down. She does eat and...

Bobcat! That's our chicken coop in the background. We haven't seen him/her in months. We thought maybe it had moved on.

Leg injury!!! Any advice would help.

Hen injured her leg yesterday. We don't know what happened. She was fine in the morning but when my daughter went into the run later she was limping badly. We put her in a dog crate so she could rest her leg but she didn't like that at all!!! We had to put her back in coop/run so she would not...

    Question about RSL and egglaying

I have 3 RSL and 2 white leghorns. They are around 15 months and have been laying eggs since they were about 18 weeks. We've had no issue with the leghorns, but the RSL sometimes have problems laying their eggs. Today one of them(Drumstick) was quiet and lethargic so we knew something was wrong...

Are you happy with your Add-A-Motor coop door??

I've read a few good reviews. I'm a little worried about having to use a light weight door. Has anyone had any problems with predators getting in? What about adding a battery? Thanks.

Thinking of adding to our flock but.......

We are thinking of adding some chicks (when they are old enough) to our year old flock of hens. Our problem is they can't free range because of predators We are thinking of building a temp coop and small run for the chicks that will be right beside our hens so they would see each other all the...

    Grass ideas??

Because of a bobcat attack I can no longer let my chickens free range. We have expanded their run and they have plenty of room now but they miss digging and eating the grass in our backyard. I was thinking of buying a couple of pieces of sod to put in their run but I'm worried about the...

    Injured Chicken maybe???

Last week a bobcat jumped over our fence and grabbed one of our chickens while they were free ranging.. We miss Nugget, but had thought all the other chickens were fine. This week our white leghorn (Athena) is acting a little different. If you touch her in her breast area she will holler at you...

    Barb wire and bobcats...

Thinking of putting barb wire on top of fence around our property. Wondered if anyone has tried this to discourage bobcats? Lost a chicken last week while they were free ranging in back yard.

Another question about light in the coop...

I have a 7 watt light in the coop at night for my chickens. They have always had this light. When first putting them in the coop at 8 weeks old they had a hard time adjusting so I put in the light which helped settle them down. I just never took it out. Since my chickens are pets I don't care...

    Starting run expansion today...

Sadly, we lost our favorite hen two days ago to a bobcat. The girls were free ranging out in the backyard, with my teenage daughter watching them, when a bobcat jumped over our 6 ft privacy fence, grab poor Nugget and was gone in seconds. We know the bobcat will be back so we have decided to...
