pull down or ducklings :P
The barn has a bench seat built along one wall with a hinged panel at one end that folds down. It comes off in the late spring and goes back in the fall. I can open to clean (easier on the back) and get broody females out if i need to. Broody females- a big part of...
One of my Swedish had a swollen knee joint over the summer. Looks just like your photo. He was in a tussle with a bigger male (who was separated out after) and end up limping. The limping turned into a painful swollen joint. It was warm to the touch. He was refusing all movement of the knee...
My Swedish ducklings hatched mid September. They have some fluff sticking out here and there but have feathered out. They have been out in the duck barn during the days and in the house at night since their feathers really started coming in. I don't think i am doing them any favors bringing them...
I like to think of my baby and toddler ducks as little dinosaurs. They will try and eat anything- so keep them away from your face. Lips, eye lashes, noses are all just too interesting to pass up. It's nothing personal they are exploring without the benefit of hands. Kind of like human babies...
Thanks it does! It rarely goes under the teens here. I use wood shavings and have a pull down that creates smaller nesting sites for the winter so they can keep warm in the duck house. You're completely right about the winter swimming they love a good size hole in the frozen pond. These little...
One of my ladies had a secret nest in the duck house supply corner. I'm concerned about them being cold. Their mom gave up on them and was over parenting by day 3. She left them to run off with the rest of her pals. I tried getting her to settle in with them but found one cold and not moving...
I find when ducklings have trama the best thing is being held next to a warm body for as long as you can take it. Pop in a movie and just give them some nice security. I have spent a couple of nights this way. Good for you for helping out a frightened and lost little guy.
Aww, these are cuties! I love my poorly marked sweedish! Great markings don't matter when it comes down to love. I'm sure these little guys will be awesome.
In the past when I've had this problem I was able to nip it by just picking the offender up and walking around with him for a while. Mind I always caught it in the teenage stage so the bite wasn't painful just annoying. Just me picking the little bady up was enough to cool off the temper. I have...
awww, sorry your special little one didnt make it. Dont be too hard on yourself from what I read you did an awesome job. Being sad is part of being a great pet mom. Your little friend knew lots of love and care- that is a wonderful gift.
Glad to hear your little friend is on the mend. I had a runner with a severe chest wound from a turtle many years ago. The vet flushed the wound and gave us a bag of sterile saline to contiue with at home. He also gave us a pot of burn cream. We never thought "Benny" would live but he did. He...
I had the best Springer, really couldnt ask for a better pal, who was an amzing duck hearder. He could gently "put em in" at night and get any off the pond for shut in time. My flock was all pekins at the time and i raised them all myself. He would let the mature ducklings hop all over him...
I've only had one pair of these. The male has a darker brown head and a khaki body and the female is khaki all over. Mine were smaller than my Pekins and a little smaller than my Blue Swedish. Hope this is somewhat helpfull.
So true! Check your house and fenced in yard all over the place, then check again, then have a friend check. Really. So upsetting to get this wrong. Happened to my first group. Never happened after. I use carpenters cloth instead of chicken wire. Much harder to get through. Good luck
