Is there a way to keep hens from soiling the nesting boxes?

Quote: Thank you for the link. I hope it will help. I found out I had been misinformed by my chicken caretaker, the hen has indeed been sleeping in the nesting box. Mystery solved. When I get home this weekend, I will try some of the methods of breaking her of this habit. I will probably put a...

Is there a way to keep hens from soiling the nesting boxes?

None of the hens are sleeping in the nesting boxes. One goes in there during the day, probably when she lays her egg, and then poops in the box on the eggs. She has done this three times already. As I am currently working out of state, the hens do not get let out until the afternoon when a...

Is there a way to keep hens from soiling the nesting boxes?

For the past couple weeks, one of my hens has been using the nesting box as a bathroom every few days, all over the eggs and everything. Is there any way to make her stop?

    YAY! First eight egg day!

I have eight golden reds that have started laying around labor day. Yesterday was the first time they all layed in the same day. If this keeps up, I will soon be buried in eggs. lol.

    My chickens love pears

Recently there was a wind storm at my house which knocked a lot of small almost ripe pears down. The person taking care of my chickens while I am away said that the chickens have been pecking away at the pears every day and really love them. I wonder if the pears are good for them or just a treat.

    different color eggs

I just find it strange that there are three distinct colors between eight hens. could it mean that they have different genetics, even though they came from the same source?

    different color eggs

I have eight golden red hens that have been laying since labor day. I have noticed that the eggs seem to be three distinct shades of brown. Some dark, some light and some chalky brow. I was wondering why this is, because they are all the same and eat the same food and such.

I have eight Golden Red hens that are just starting to lay. I got one egg Sunday, one egg Monday, none Tuesday, three Wednesday, four Thursday, and three today. The eggs were laid at all different times of the day and I'm sure they all haven't started yet. The eggs are not all small, even one of...

Anyone in WNY who changed town rule to keeping chickens??

WOW, I live in Concord in Erie county, and I never even thought to check the rules on having chickens. I just assumed since my neighbors have them that it would be ok. Maybe I should check. Where do you find out that info?

    Hi from Western NY

Hello everyone! I moved from Buffalo to a more rural area five years ago and have decided to try my hand at raising a small flock of hens for the fresh eggs. I picked up eight newly hatched chicks from a local feed store at the end of April and have been busy all summer building and improving...

    Golden Reds

Hello. At the end of April I purchased eight chicks from a local farm store. The only information they could tell me is that they are called Golden Reds. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which breeds were crossed to produce this type. Here is a picture of the hens at eleven weeks old...
