I have talked to my neighbors several times and they've tried things but aren't educated in penning them. They aren't home much so they rarely see what the birds are doing. I honestly believe (and have told them this) if they feed them more they won't go forging as much. I can't fence in my...
My neighbors, as nice as they are, don't really know what they are doing. Yes they have a decent coop and pen area for their flock but the fence is inadequate and I keep trying to tell them they need to reinforce it. I also don't believe they supply the birds with enough feed because the birds...
One thing I do often is hanging corn on the cob from string and a fishing pole. They have to jump, bob, and weave to get to the corn and it lasts longer!
I posted this on the duck forum so it is cross-posted hoping to get the most responses! I feel bad for this little girl!
A few days ago amid below to just about freezing temps a black duck found her way to our yard. She was timid at first but has recently let me pick her up and pet her without...
I am posting here on the duck board thinking you guys might have more information than over on the chicken boards, but I guess it's a toss up really! :)

Wow, I last posted here on 5/24 about breaking our hen from being broody and here it is 7/8 and she's broody again. She started a few days ago seeming odd but is full on broody now. Back in the cage she goes.
We just started with our first broody hen. It took us about a week to figure it out but my husband finally got around to making a cage for her last night so we can break her of it. Here's hoping it works quickly!!
Maybe they are in the midst of getting some new feathers and it hurts to be handled. I'm still a novice chicken owner but I have noticed when mine were getting the pin feathers in, they really did not like to be handled or touched.
I've just been wanting a mix of the two breeds to see which we have better luck with and which taste better but I didn't want to get 25 total. The local feed store only has the cornish X in and can't get the red rangers anymore for the season. I think the store has a few of the birds actually in...
I looked at Murray McMurray hatchery since I can get a mix of cornish X and red rangers but it was 50$ for 15 birds including shipping!! I figured if we breast them out and keep the legs and wings the cost of the meat outweighs the decision!!!!
How do you do it to make it worth while?? I...
I was going to do something like a frame with the wire but then we had the ladder my husband was just going to cut up for firewood. It worked out quite nicely to grow the grass because of all the rungs keeping the fat hens from pushing the plastic wire down. I think I'll leave it there for a...
It's growing well! It isn't nearly as much grass (just not as much area as I had thought it first looked like :) ) but it gives me hope to try it on a larger scale soon. The grass is just at the top of the plastic chicken wire I have over the ladder and the chickens look at it with drool on...
My husband and I wanted to get some meat birds but we do not want our first experience with them to be with 25 of them. We are looking for somewhere in the range of 8-12. Does anyone have a suggestion locally to Harford County, MD or mail order if need be where I can get that few birds? I'd...
It has been nearly a week and the pullets and hens have all be coexisting in the coop peacefully. No wounds, no blood, not major bickering that we can find. I tossed out some seed and mealworms as a treat and all of them came for a peck without any fighting. I'm so glad this worked out smoothly!!
I don't know if we've just been lucky or just lucky so far. The pullets have spent the last 2 nights in the coop with the hens and aside from a little pecking (no blood, wounds of any kind) things have been relatively calm. The hens do not care for the heat lamp being on at night so we tried to...
I had the pullets and the hens in the outside pen all together since 10am this morning. There was very little pecking from the older hens. They all seemed to stay in 2 separate flocks more than anything but did often come in close contact with no real problems. We're going to see how roosting...
