If it helps my flock consists of large breeds that lay light brown/cream colored eggs and they have facial feathers, a trait that he has strangely not inherited.
The mother could just have accidentally cracked the egg and then ate it, or the egg was bad and she was hungry so again she ate it... Who knows...:idunno
Well it's a year later and they are both Roos. :P
That's Midnight, he is alone in his mini coop because his girlfriend went broody.
This is Tweetie and below is his girlfriend.
I will have to get him another one so her back recovers...:/
Midnights girlfriend.
Their actual chick, he has...
Yeah, it's one of mine, my broody hatched him. I just don't know what breed of chickens I have, they were always "just chickens" to me until last year. :P
Any fruits, especially watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes and fresh figs.
Most veggies.
Sesame and sunflower seeds.
Boiled or scrambled eggs.
Yoghurt mostly in the summer.
Cooked oatmeal in the winter.
Sometimes spaghetti noodles because they think they are worms and it is hilarious to watch.:lol...
They probably tried to call him or just were more interested in the other eggs, try to put small walls around them so the chicks dont wander off to far.
Hmm, the eggs could hatch but I wouldn't count on it... The eggs probably got chilled and died or shrink wrapped if she was gone from the nest for a long time. I would still put them in the incubator, you never know... Don't clean the eggs, at this point it won't help, if the bacteria has...
I have a lonely chick as well three days old. I have him in a brooder but he does get lonely so I added a hot water bottle with a fuzzy cover and he LOVES it!
I agree, at this age a couple of bells will do the job. I hang lettuce and stuff in my coop to keep them occupied, forgot yours were still young. :P
I am glad they are doing better! :D
I always worried about sharpies too but I had put an old egg under my broody to encourage broodiness and I used a sharpie to mark it, the chick hatched fine and is very happy and healthy.
Are you sure it was day 16? Some chicks just hatch early, I don't think she stepped on it, the chick would be crushed. Is it dry and fluffy? Check the shell, is there any goop or blood? If not the chick is probably just early, where were you storing the eggs before placing them under her?
