Hello everyone. One of our favorite hens is sick. She was very lethargic, puffed up and off to herself. I brought her in the house and have been treating her with Corid. She is acting like she feels much better but is still not eating and has also vomited twice. I did feed her some noodles...
Will a mom with chicks accept more chicks that aren't hers? I am getting a new coop delivered next week and am keeping my small (4x8') coop for moms and babies. I'm thinking of ordering chicks from Murray and am wondering if the mom will be mean to them if I keep them in with the mom and...
Thank you all for your input.... I have the heater in the coop and they are free to move away from it if they choose to. So far they have been cuddled up to it. I opened up the coop and they can go where they want to go. It was close to 0 last night and I was worried about them getting too...
We have 3 beautiful baby chicks!! They are SO cute! I will try to get a picture of them soon. Right now they hide under mom. I have a heater and heat lamp on them because I'm like a mother hen. I would sleep down there if there was room:)
We had 4 eggs but unfortunately 1 baby didn't make it:(
Thankfully, I am at work today so I haven't gone out to check on chickens every 30 minutes. There was nothing happening when I left this morning. I'm hoping for at least some pipping by the time I get home! This is making me crazy!
Thank you! I'm trying not to think about it and just let mom do her job but I can't help but run out there and look at her once or twice a day. I've vowed not to look under her for at least 24 hours. I am hoping I will see chicks running around down there by Wednesday!
Do you all think broody hens know when their eggs are due to hatch? Ours should hatch this weekend and I went to check on her today and she was WAY more irritable than usual and did not want me moving her to check her eggs. Usually she isn't so moody! I'm getting anxious to see some action...
Well our chicks are due to hatch sometime this weekend, today is day 18. I went home at lunch and my broody was out running around with the other chickens. I ran to feel the eggs and they weren't cold. As I was in the coop she came back in and sat down. I guess she knows what she is doing:)...
Broody hen is still sitting. We put a heater in the coop today to keep the coop warm for the babies. I know that is controversial;) It is in the 20's here and I want the babies to do well so I am heating the coop. I also ordered a new coop today and am going to use my old coop as a brooder...
Candled one of my eggs today and the chick is looking so big! Scheduled to hatch this weekend! We fixed up a place under the nesting box that is screened in to put mom and eggs later in the week. How long should I leave her there after the chicks hatch? They will have food water and room to...
I can't answer the questions because this is my first broody hen. I just want to say good luck to you all with broody's!
My broody is still sitting on her 4 eggs. Today is day 10. 11 days to go! I candled one egg today and could see the chick moving around! I'm hoping she hangs in there...
Rural King has a little thing that they call a brooder that looks like a small doghouse. I thought about getting that for the other girls to lay their eggs in outside the coop. I'm afraid that may confuse them terribly though:) I may make a place for her inside the coop that she can't get out...
