This our first year raising chickens and I must say having a broody makes raising new born chicks a cinch. Our buff Orpington was not even a year old and she hatched 12 out of 15. It has been two weeks and they are all chipper and active. We lost half of our original batch by this time last...
Pelleted food helps with the mess. I got them for sounding the alarm and bug control. Their eggs are good, but not better than pastured chicken eggs. I personally do not care for them and would get rid of them if I made time to catch them. So I probably will not replenish their flock if they...
I built a 4x8 teepee looking brooder for mine. Just put a tarp over half of it. Just put hay, food, and water in there. Broody hen makes it a cinch with the care. Highly recommend it.
Our first batch he we used shavings, this batch we have now we use hay just because we had it. I think I like hay better. They get good traction and if they fall it is springy enough to absorb impact.
Donuts will get them on your shoulder. Even if you are standing. Even if they are buff orpingtons. The beating you take on the way up can be painful...
Our broody hatched 12 out of 15 eggs. Today she led those rascals out if the nest. All appear vibrant and active.
This being our first hatch I was thinking maybe we would get about 8. Needless to say I am impressed with our girl's first attempt.
I guess you can count me in. One of my Buff Orpingtons went broody Friday. I stuffed 10 fresh eggs under her and will let her go at it. She will be due around the 12th of April.
It is apparently mating season in my area so my guineas paired up and went their separate ways (I own 4). One of the boys got hit by a raptor and had his neck broken bringing me to 3 (poor girl kept calling for her mate). I got these birds to help with alerting my chickens to dangers in the area...
We put out some new laying boxes for our girls. We put some hay, eggs, and golf balls in them. Our rooster hops up there and begins building a nest and is now sitting on the egg and golf ball. This happen to anyone else?
Design looks good. I do not know if cutting out the bottom is a great idea. I think it compromises the structural integrity and gives another potential access point for predators should there be a weakness. I would just put in a screen that is elevated if you do not want them walking in poop. It...
Australorps were bred for the extremes of Australia. From what I understand they will lay in just about any weather, too. They hold the record for the most eggs in a year-364 eggs.
