This was my first injured chicken. I took her to the vet after it happened, he gave her antibiotics and didn't expect her to last 4 days. I fed her and gave her water through a syringe. When she started eating and drinking on her own I thought she was getting better. She did look better...
Thanks for responding! The wound is still open, she is not segregated anymore, but they are not harming her or stopping her from eating or drinking. One of the girls is very protective of her. She can move around. When I free range them I put her out and she hops a bit, but prefers to...
Our favorite chicken was bit by a dog on her leg over a month ago. The vet didn't expect her to live more than a few days but she did. Sh does not look good, she is pale and thin. It is hard for her to walk on that leg. She is eating and drinking, but she sits in the corner most of the day...
Yes, I think the mice come out at night. My friend told me she observed her chickens chasing and catching mice, so closing it will curb the problem. But I need to stop the flinging, food all over the floor is food for mice at night. I like the steeper pipe in the picture posted a few pages back...
So they have to get their heads in deeper, and can't fling food this way? I could try that and still close the same lid at night. Do you think the mice get at the food while the chickens are up and about? If not, I could still leave the lid open all day, while I am at work and close it at night...
Sorry I have been MIA, I took care of my terminally ill father for the past month. Sadly he passed away last Saturday.
I got back home today (the girls were excited to see my daughter - ha!) and checked out the coop. My neighbors and friends took care of my pets while I was gone, they did...
2 days ago I got home and saw lots of food all over the floor of the coop. So much that I left the feeder lid closed and they still have plenty to eat. This defeats the purpose of the feeder lid as rodents can eat the food as well. Having the food all over the floor of the coop has me worried...
Yes, "the ugly ducking phenomena" -they don't like white chickens, it must be some group way of weeding out those perceived as sick or as a danger for the flock. If the flock feels that they should blend better, then white would stick out and should be taken care of.
Hi, I am a newbie myself but I did gain some insight into this problem by having 2 different chickens picked on. It happened to both right after they lost their feathers. The first chicken arrived at my place after already losing her feathers and having had them start to grow back, so I didn't...
I don't know how to upload videos to this site, maybe you could just watch it here:

Cool solar panel lighting system, way beyond me, but exactly what I would wish to achieve at some point.
I finally had some time to work a bit on the coop, added the magnets to keep rodents from accessing the feed at night. I also cut a new stopper, one of the chickens would fling food about...
