I just let the hen eat the chick food also, I feel after sitting on the eggs for so long she can use the extra protein. She will need to peck in their food to teach them how to eat anyway.I have never had a problem with a hen eating the chicks food.

I would go with the pellets myself, the chickens will handle it just fine, I have used it with my chicks before rather than buy some for the chicks and some for the guinea I just bought 1 large sack of the gamebird which the guineas had to have.

I put all my feed in 5 gallon buckets with lids on them, it keeps bugs and moths out. Many fast food places get pickles in 5 gallon buckets with lids and are happy to give you the empty ones. You can also buy the buckets at Lowes or Home Depot and the lids at Wal-mart.

I do have it raised as high as I can for my bantams to reach but then the standards rake them out. Mines is hanging from a chain and a S hook.
